The McColl Center's internationally acclaimed Artist-in-Residence program serves as a catalyst for growth for emerging and mid-career artists. McColl Center hosts three residency terms per year—fall, winter/spring, and summer, for four artists per term. An artist residency at McColl Center is a moment to think big, take risks in the creative process, and explore ideas within the context of Charlotte.

Artists-in-residence receive private housing adjacent to McColl Center, a large-scale private studio in our historic building in Uptown Charlotte, curatorial guidance, marketing and PR support, and a generous stipend. While in residency, our artists have the freedom to fully focus on artistic research, exploration, and creation while also engaging with McColl Center’s Igniters community and the local creative sector.

An art residency provides the technical conditions, time, and space to develop ideas and try new approaches. It is a moment that promotes connection between artists from different backgrounds and consequently the exchange of knowledge and experiences.

Aviário Studio Artist Book Residency aims to promote the exploration and production in the Artist Book field. Artist books are consensually understood as an object that takes the shape or the dynamics of a book, and is made by an artist. There are many ways to conceive a book, and given the multidisciplinary features of Aviário Studio, it is possible to pursue very distinct paths. 

We offer the conditions to test possibilities and materialize ideas. On one hand, it can be a moment of transition, more connected to experimentation and research; on the other hand, it can be the point of consolidation of a project translated into the production of a new body of work.

The duration, focus and outcome of the residency is defined by the participating artist’s goals. 

KODA offers an artist residency program for two mid-career, female-identifying and/or non-binary artists who create conceptual and socially engaged work. The Fall 2025 residency will span from August 1-October 31, 2025. The program is placed under the theme of Peace-Building.

Selected artists receive:

• Studio space from August 1-October 31, 2025 on Governors Island

APPLY: The Open Call for KODA Fall 2025 Social Practice Residency program placed under the theme of Peace-Building opens on March 10, 2025. Proposals will be accepted between March 10, 2025 at 10:00 AM ET and April 10, 2025 at 11:59 PM ET. Two selected artists will be notified of the residency offer by May 31, 2025.

We provide accepted artists with space and time to create new work without the interruptions of normal life and with the bonus of healthy meals. During each residency, we host visiting artist presentations as well as resident "show & tells" -- both are dessert potlucks.

The purpose of The Whirlybird Compound Artist in Residency of Acadiana, run by Christy Leichty and Jim Phillips, is to enhance the creative process of artists through cultural immersion.

Christy & Jim provide 6 artist in residence accommodations in a secluded and inspiring setting in South Louisiana, complete with a residence, studio spaces, gallery, performance spaces, kitchen, laundry and basic amenities, allowing artists to fully immerse themselves in the unique cultural experiences and traditions of the region.

Artists are responsible for their own food and transportation, Christy & Jim offer weekly shopping trips for those without vehicles and spontaneous cultural and artistic events. Artists are expected to follow the The Whirlybird Compound rules, which are simple: no pets, no non-working partners, no indoor smoking, and no alterations to the property. Christy & Jim offer a unique opportunity for paying it forward which they call Community Lagniappe (in Cajun and Creole culture, lagniappe is a small gift given or obtained by way of good measure) – where the artists are expected to contribute to the community through a project, such as a reading, a workshop, a recital/gig/jam or an art show. Lagniappe does not have to be complicated or a major focus of the residency, simple contributions are preferred.  And, we love to have feedback at the end of the residency.

Residencies of 4-6 weeks or more are preferred, but shorter stays of up to 1 week will be considered

Aviário Studio Multidisciplinary Residency aims to promote exploration and production in the Visual Arts. Artists can develop projects using a medium or a combination of technologies. Aviário Studio is an artist-run space with workshops equipped to develop works on Printmaking, Ceramics, Wood, Metal, Sculpture, Installation, Drawing, Painting, Photography and Bookbinding.

Aviário Studio Large Format Printmaking Residency aims to promote the production and dissemination of Printmaking done in a large format. Artists can develop projects using a wide range of techniques, from relief to intaglio, screen printing, transfer, monotype, among others.

The Core Residency Program awards residencies to exceptional, highly motivated emerging artists and critical writers committed to developing a sustainable practice. The residency term is 23 months, during which fellows receive $100,000 ($50,000 per year) plus a health stipend.

Fellows are provided with a private studio and benefit from regular studio visits by regional, national, and international artists and curators. They receive a discount on classes at the Glassell School of Art and may request access to Glassell studios, which include facilities for painting, printmaking, digital and film photography, sculpture, jewelry, and ceramics. Fellows are also invited to engage with everything the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, has to offer, including the permanent collection of approximately 80,000 artworks spanning more than 5,000 years of history; two house museums; and a distinguished staff of museum professionals. Fellows enjoy borrowing privileges at the Museum’s Hirsch Library and Rice University’s Fondren Library.

Fellows participate in a group exhibition during the spring of their first year and, in the spring of their second year, present a solo exhibition or project. Critics-in-residence propose an outcome for their second year that aligns with their individual professional goals.

The Hundredth Hill Writer and Musician Retreats provide creatives 50 acres of pristine woodlands and four original, upcycled, and finely-crafted residences for week- and month-long retreats in the rolling hills just outside Bloomington, Indiana. The retreat’s mission is to offer quiet, inspirational space for artists and leaders to create, think, reconnect with their work, and make progress on world-changing projects. Artists may apply as individuals or as a 4-person team.

Musician and composer Krista Detor and sound engineer David Weber founded The Hundredth Hill in response to a world in need of imaginative solutions to current social and environmental crises. 

Residences include a refurbished Airstream, a loft featuring a twisting handcrafted staircase built with branches from the property, a wheelchair-accessible cabin, and a cottage filled with delightful, upcycled features. Gathering spaces include a rustic yet comfortable barn with full-kitchen, restroom, eclectic furniture, loft, stage, and room to host 25-30 participants. A professional DIY recording studio is available on the property for an additional charge.

Meals are not prepared for artists, but all units include kitchenettes with refrigerator, sink, microwave, induction cooktop, air fryer, panini grill, coffee maker, and coffee, tea, and spices. Retreats include a fully stocked pantry and fridge in each individual residence for making meals, and access to laundry facilities.
