Manship Artists Residency
Manship Artists Residency
Manship Artists Residency is dedicated to the preservation of an environmentally and historically significant site that has been given new life as an international, interdisciplinary artists residency for the benefit of the community and visitors to Cape Ann.
Manship Artists values those who challenge us to think differently and aims to create an environment where creativity and questions are encouraged and where all are welcome.
Manship is making special efforts towards racial and social equity by learning what traditionally underrepresented and underfunded artists need, and by developing effective solutions to serve them.

Residency Program Information
Residency Program Summary
Application Information
Based on the advice of ACA, Manship has been engaged in a test-pilot period during which we have been inviting artists and others doing creative work, who have been recommended by our advisors.
2022 marks the year that Manship will begin the transition to open calls, with applicants being selected by juries and organizational partners.
Artists are responsible for their travel and living expenses, exclusive of accommodations.
During the current test-pilot period, invited artists are not charged for their stay.
Artists-in-residence provide feedback and recommendations, and fill out a thorough post-residency evaluation of the program.
Manship is seeking partners to provide support for resident artists.
We invite you to suggest potential organizations, institutions and/or funders who would like to help Manship serve artists who would otherwise not be able to avail themselves to a residency without support.
Accessibility
Manship Artists Residency is at an historic site that will be developed overtime according to ADA Standards for Accessible Design. Built in 1944-45 on the site of a former quarry, the building and grounds pose some accessibility challenges. The public areas on the first floor of the residence and the barn studio are accessible, and much of the immediate landscape surrounding the residence and the barn studio can be traversed on foot or with a wheelchair.

Artists are encouraged to contact us to determine whether Manship is able to accommodate you at this time.
All doorways are not yet ADA compliant, making certain rooms within the residence inaccessible to those in a wheelchair.
Housing & Accomodation
Designed to be welcoming to the large Manship family and their many friends, the residence and grounds have many unique spaces that lend themselves to gatherings large and small.
There is a large, eat-in kitchen where residents can share meals and socialize. The parlor or great room of the house is also outfitted with several sitting areas and features a grand piano, a harpsichord, and an electric keyboard for the pleasure (and practice) of residents.
Studio & Facilities
Manship offers raw studio space and a nurturing natural environment, suitable for visual and performing artists who bring their materials with them.
We also have community partners and affiliate artists who have offered to share or rent their studios and equipment with Manship Artists.
Cape Ann's active community of visual and performing artists, with which Manship has a relationship include potters, printmakers, glassblowers, woodworkers, and dancers.
Currently four of the five bedrooms in the Manship residence serve as flexible space, which can be turned into either sleeping quarters or blank studio space.
