Jentel awards residencies to artists, writers, and composers who are focused and serious about their intent, who may have proven themselves by publication, exhibition or performance or who may not necessarily be well advanced in their work, but who have developed a personal vision or voice. The program welcomes visual artists in all media and writers in fiction, creative nonfiction, and poetry and composers in all genres of music.

Each resident is provided with living accommodations that include a private room and a shared common living area with kitchen and a separate studio space.

Anyone over 25 years of age who is a citizen of the United States is eligible to apply. Those currently enrolled in academic programs are ineligible to apply.

Studios are equipped with:

  • a writing desk and adjustable office chair
  • a desk lamp
  • a reclining lounge chair
  • book shelves

Wassaic, NY, United States

Mission

The Wassaic Project, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, uses art and arts education to foster positive social change. We nurture connections between our artists and our neighbors facilitating a mutual broadening of perspectives and respect across economic and cultural boundaries.

Vision

The Wassaic Project envisions a community in the Hamlet of Wassaic and its surrounding region that is socially inclusive, generous, cooperative, and economically vibrant.

We engage in a collaborative effort with members of our community to develop programs that are creative, experimental, and accessible across the economic spectrum.

We strive to be actively anti-racist and to have diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility as an integral part of our programs and initiatives. We will continually evaluate, solicit feedback, and evolve our efforts to ensure their effectiveness.

We build local pride and community vitality by an informed sense of the past and a clear, contemporary, innovative, and compassionate look toward the future.

We foster the youth in our community and help them realize their full potential.

We aim to be financially stable with a creative staff and multiple partners — nonprofit, public, and private.

It is our hope that the work that we do in Wassaic will be shared nationwide and serve as a toolkit for community revitalization through the arts and the spirit of generosity. Above all else, we honor and respect our community.

Application Requirements

  • Contact information

  • 1–10 work samples

  • CV (3 pages max)

  • 2 references

  • $25 application fee

  • Proposal: We believe our residency works best as a creative laboratory untied to outcome. We would like to hear about what makes you curious, what you are interested in investigating, and what your jumping off point would be. (200 words max)

  • Optional question: We want to look at your work according to your definition of success. Are there additional criteria that you would like the panel/us to consider when reviewing your work? For example: What do you consider to be a successful piece or process? If you work with a community, the artistic product may not be the sole or most important creation of the work. Are there other impacts and creations in your process we should focus on? Please share any documentation that could bring us close to these impacts—interviews, testimony from participants, writing about the work, images from an event, etc.

Review

Artists-in-residence are selected by a review panel composed of the Wassaic Project Co-Directors, Director of Artistic Programming, and professionals in the field. Residents will be selected based on the quality of their work, commitment to their practice, and ability to interact positively with the community at large.

The actual cost of each residency is $5,000 per month, which includes a semi-private studio, private bedroom, full use of our facilities, visiting artist program, studio visits, insurance, and staff support. In an effort to serve and support emerging artists, we attempt to subsidize residencies for all individual artists who do not have other forms of support. Thanks to the generous support of donors and grants, the artist’s contribution for the winter residency program is $600 per a 4-week period.

We also offer need-based financial assistance to artists-in-residence for whom it would be impossible to attend without financial support. Financial need is self-reported by artists in their applications. We ask that artists who are in a position to fully contribute towards the residency fee please do so.

  • The ArtForArtists Fellowship for Social Justice Based Practice offers a no-fee residency and $500 honorarium to 1 artist who identifies as Black, Indigenous or a Person of Color per year.

To be considered for the Work and Family Fellowship and Sustainable Arts Fellowship:

In your application, please take some time to reflect on the ways in which care and caregiving, whatever those words mean to you, come through (or might come through) in your work. It’s okay if this isn’t something you’ve considered before. We think of these Fellowships as a starting point towards building a future where artists shape the way society sees and values care.

All applicants are considered for the Mary Ann Unger Fellowship and the ArtForArtists Fellowship for Social Justice Based Practice and do not have to complete any additional information on their application.

Our studio is located in a historic hillside city center, with most housing options located in the nearby ancient medina, neither of which are accessible by wheel chair or by guests with mobility disabilities. Our studio is on the second floor of a historic 100 year old building without an elevator. The  cobblestone streets and sidewalks in the city are often uneven and most events and excursions are accessed by walking. We advise our applicants to be aware of these conditions and assess whether or not this type of residency will be a good fit for their accessibility needs.

How much of the residency experience can artists with limited mobility participate?

We do not recommend this residency to artists with severe mobility limitations. Artists who are able to walk, but with difficulty, may benefit from bringing along an assistant or arranging to employ a local assistant during their stay. The location requires a fair amount of walking and climbing stairs to the 2nd floor studio. Taxi's can be arranged if necessary, and a resident artist could participate in most of the studio in-house work space, events and activities, as long as they are able to walk from their housing to the studio.

Please briefly describe the facilities and areas of the campus that are NOT accessible.

Artists stay in housing in the local area and ancient city surrounding the studio. The path between housing and studio is uneven cobblestone, with high curbs. Access to the studio includes an entrance with a high threshold and two flights of stairs to reach the 2nd floor studio. Inside the studio all rooms and spaces are level, except for the bathrooms, which have a raised floor and step up for entry.

Recorder Instrument Residency

Otis, OR, United States

Members of the Oregon Coast Recorder Society have raised $103,000 to establish a recorder residency at Sitka, beginning in 2003.

To be eligible for the residency, applicants are required to earn part of their income from recorder performance or recorder instrument composition. This is to indicate that applicants should have a degree of professionalism, and people at the beginning of a career are as welcome as mature artists.

Residencies are 2 – 6 weeks in length, and living space and a studio are provided. Past residents have taught  workshops  and given concerts in the community. New in 2022: An anonymous donor is supporting a $500/week honorarium in support of this residency. The honorarium can be used in any way the resident chooses.

Sitka Center Residency

Otis, OR, United States

Sitka residencies provide time and space for self-paced work and reflection in an inspiring natural setting. Residents from a broad range of art, writing, performance and science-based practices come to Sitka to create and explore away from the familiar contexts and constraints of daily routines, and free from external expectations. Located within the unique ecosystems of Cascade Head and the Salmon River Estuary on Oregon's central coast, Sitka is a place where natural curiosity is sparked and creativity is unleashed.

Since our founding, we have hosted hundreds of visual artists, photographers, writers, journalists, musicians, composers, filmmakers, educators and a broad range of natural scientists and interdisciplinary creatives. We currently invite 14-30 practitioners to stay at Sitka each year. Some are emerging voices while others are practicing professionals, and our residents represent a diversity of geographies and cultural backgrounds. A range of personal and shared experiences are possible at Sitka, from sanctuary and solitude to cross-pollination and community.

Sitka is committed to equity, welcoming people from diverse cultures, backgrounds and experiences, and acknowledges that stepping away from day to day life to spend extended time in nature may be a more complex undertaking for some. From climate change and environmental justice to systemic racism and economic inequality, diverse perspectives help spark new ideas and collaborative approaches to address today's challenges in creative ways. Bringing together people from different backgrounds and fields of expertise is core to Sitka's art and ecology mission, and we strive to overcome barriers to create a safe and secure setting for our practitioners to experience our unique environment.

For residents without access to a car we provide pick up at the Lincoln City bus stop connecting from PDX as well as grocery pick-up services from our local grocery store.

We can assist with connecting residents with citizen science and educational ecology opportunities and with the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde's Chachalu Art Museum & Cultural Center.

We offer paid opportunities for interested residents to participate in our K-8 Create program.

We provide plenty of verbal and written orientation and guidance to our space prior and during the residency period. The team is always available to connect with individuals as needed, weather to address specifc concerns or needs or just to chat.

Write On, Door County Writers' Residency Program

Fish Creek, WI, United States

In the heart of Door County, on Wisconsin's northeast peninsula, nestled between the waters of Green Bay and Lake Michigan, writers can find the peace and solitude to focus on their craft. Write On offers a space of inspiration and reflection on 59 acres of meadows, orchards, and woods.

We invite application from writers in any genre, regardless of publication history. We also welcome literary arts administrators who need time to focus on upcoming projects. Writers traveling with children or other family members are welcome to apply.

Write On is a small residency program, typically housing one to three writers at a time. We encourage collaborative residencies, though each writer must submit an individual application. There are two spacious bedrooms with a shared bath on the second floor. The first floor contains a one-bedroom suite with full bath as well as shared eat-in kitchen and living room.

Additional creative space can be found in The Coop, located in the residency meadow, and in the writing center, located across the street.

Additional Eligibility Information

Rolling applications reviewed upon receipt. Deadlines for special prime seasons. Applicants with nature as their muse, inspiration, or collaborator will receive priority.

Individuals must be able to let the normal world and lifestyle go during your stay and it is encouraged that you utilize the time and access to the benefits of being away from contemporary society. This program is suited to those ready to embrace the natural immersion, a different sense of time, and a generally nurturing space as most people have experienced some sort of shift while on site - personally, creatively, professionally.

----------

  • family-friendly opportunities including summer camp program
  • dog friendly - based on several factors (no other pets)
  • apply as a group for the Lemon Lodge that sleeps up to 14

----------

If you cannot go a day without your favorite coffee shop visit, have fast food on the brain, or need lots of people around to function, this is not the place for you. This is a rural location about 20 minutes drive to the closest small town - Hohenwald (German for High Forest) - with farm land and forestry in the area. The sounds are different, the colors and smells of the earth/air/water will entice you.

Be prepared for a different sense of time here and your project goals may actually go faster because you don't have your normal life distractions. Although there is broadband wifi, you are encouraged to have self-discipline to avoid doom-scrolling to focus on your work.

There is no guarantee as to how many people will be on site at the same time, so if you are seeking a more group experience indicate this on the application and consider applying for one of the seasonal highlights.

Transportation from and to the Nashville airport is an add-on option. Preference of arrival dates is Saturday or Sunday. Month-long or longer stays that have been approved after an additional interview may coordinate a calendar month arrival/departure.

----------

  • no shoes inside the houses
  • limited use of alcohol or use this time to be dry, no drugs, no weapons
  • safe place for all walks of life, no bullying/harassment/fraternization acceptable
  • please help maintain a clean/healthy space by not leaving out food, washing dishes by the end of the day, and cleaning as you go on counters or other surfaces

Additional expectations are outlined on the website so please review there.

2 weeks = $750
3 weeks = $900
A discount is currently offered for month residency term limited availability: $800

Lodging fee based on room selection, additional studio needs (often additional electric in certain seasons), and length of stay. State requires hospitality and sales taxes on the lodging less than 30 days. The range is from $250-850 depending on the room type and duration of stay.

There are many facets of the residency program that are included in the fee and all of this is outlined on the website. Consider this a creative exchange. This is artist-founded /artist-led and a complete vision start-up from the property acquisition to the design of the spaces. There is not a large board or fundraising operation behind the scenes.

Please visit https://www.sarasvati.space/residency-overview for the most up to date information on rooms and residency fees.

important consideration in the residency fee component:

  • Every effort is made to create a clean and comfortable environment for each person on site, but this is definitely not a resort with a large staff. Sometimes when we are in the creative zone, we do not notice what is around us. Some of the rules include no shoes inside and washing dishes daily. Residency fee includes a housekeeping visit at least once a week to help clean the house's shared bathroom and communal spaces. Consider an add-on option if you would rather focus exclusively on your work and ignore the mundane around you.

Grant/Scholarship/Other Funding Support Details

Farm Stay Scholarship ($150-300) is based on application interest and an interview to discuss your skills, if any. This funding deducts from the final fees and requires about 6 hours a week of participation in physical activities on the land - some of these hours are guided and working with your host, Val.

Depending on the season and the urgency of current projects, your help could be in gardening/weeding, shoveling/digging, transporting manure for compost pile or garden beds, chopping down bamboo to use in creative fencing projects, breaking/trimming limbs and wood pieces into kindling and firewood size chunks, helping carry or install various items like t-post fencing, picking up or transporting rocks or sticks, helping to clear trails or rake leaves in the winter transporting to the garden. There's usually always a small art project like a mural or organizing the upcycle pile to create something fun for the garden as well.

Please review the website for the limits on this funding scholarship.

Additional Accessibility Information

The land is rural and the main dwelling option is a 1930s house with a few steps to get in. All lodging has stairs for entrance at the moment. Much of the grounds is grass, gravel, or chert. This is a farm landscape. As a startup with limited funds, accessibility has been a priority, but is incomplete as of now. Please ask and we will be updating as soon as things have improved.

Other Services/Aids Offered in Residency + Other Programming

This is a small residency program with typically no more than 4 and a max of 9 participants (unless the Lemon Lodge is occupied by a group up to 14). There is no guarantee as to the amount of people on site at any one time. It could be a positive solo experience. Each situation is managed on a case by case basis. There is no staff except the housekeeping helper. We will do our best to accommodate and let you know up front if the environment is suitable for your needs.

How much of the residency experience can artists with limited mobility participate?

The Lemon Lodge is the most accessible accommodations and there are gathering spaces in this structure. The windows overlook the donkeys so if one cannot walk out to see them personally, one can view from windows or the back porch. When we have people with allergies, we gather in this space. Each residency is individualized.

Please briefly describe the facilities and areas of the campus that are NOT accessible.

There are 5 acres of landscape on the main site with the lodging and studios. This is a rural area with rolling hills. Much of the land is grass or gravel for driving. The 12 acres of land across the street is a primitive campground and has a dirt driveway. It rains a lot here and can get muddy. The Lemon Lodge was built in 1930 it does have open space in the common area and standard doors for the front and bedrooms. There are three steps and we are looking at creating a ramp. The bathroom has a walk in shower and will be expanded to be ADA when funding becomes available.

Common/Communal Spaces Information

There are three main lodging units. Each one features a common area living room and kitchens. Each residency occupant is expected to help maintain the common areas in general like wiping the counters and tables after use, washing dishes, sweeping up messes, etc.  Pictures of the spaces are included in the website gallery.

All rooms are private except if a group has arranged the Lemon Lodge which as a loft dorm for up to 7 people. Three rooms are available for double or triple occupancy for partners/families/collaborators.

Laundry access is limited in two of the three dwellings.

Housekeeping services occur before arrival, once a week, and after departure, but more can be available as an add-on if you would like a more leisurely experience while you work.

The big outdoors is the most beneficial aspect of this residency. Artists have found the porches/decks and general grounds to be ideal for their work in spring, summer, and fall. Outdoor place-based installations are definitely welcome here.

Writers and those using laptops for editing/writing/etc. can be mobile throughout the 5-acres with wifi and find unique spots to sit. Others have set up a hammock or found a favorite rock by the river for their work. Photographers have used the natural scenery and the camp animals as subjects, while there are also opportunities for unique landscape in the nearby vicinity of farmland and an occasional abandoned building. The historic Natchez Trace Parkway is about 20 minutes drive to an entrance and features some lovely park areas to explore and there are a few other state parks within an easy drive.

Assigning a workspace is a primary consideration of each application and the time that participants may overlap. Please be specific as to your needs and habits.

There are 5 formal and informal studio type spaces while some have also used the communal living rooms as workspace during inclement weather or just personal preferences. These vary in size and style. One room - the PineRoom - in Lemon Lodge has a window a/c while the other spaces are more rustic so they are not climate controlled.

Please be descriptive of your work needs. The pine room offers table space, good natural light, and climate control. Studio 1 is enclosed with three walls of windows and is best used in temporal seasons. The two rustic studios that do not have climate control are available for larger scale work that have been used by artists in sculpture/installation, acrylic painting, and watercolor.

Currently working on start-up phase for renovation of a 2100 sq ft commercial space in downtown Hohenwald, TN to become an art gallery, an arts workspace, a retail store (with art consignment opportunities), and events such as poetry readings, small stage solo acts or comedy, or workshops (from art to writing, etc.) with a designated area with ballet flooring. The hope is this will be open sometime later in 2024 - High Forest Den. Stay in touch and apply for exhibits or to sell your work on consignment.

Studio options are outlined on the website with lots of pictures. Many participants have scheduled their terms to be during seasons where the outside can be used effectively. Some have opted to use the communal spaces that are climate controlled for their work instead of the other options. Please describe your work and needs for the conversation about what studio may work best for you.

ACE (Asheville/Chicago Exchange) Choreographic Fellowship

Mars Hill, NC, United States

An ACE Fellowship in Dance provides immersive creative time and space to selected artists, free of charge.

Available to established Chicago area choreographers and dancemakers, awardees receive the rare opportunity of uninterrupted time and space to create their next great work, along a variety of supportive financial benefits. The length of the residency is one to two weeks, and the choreographer can be joined by 3-5 dancers/collaborators. There is no expectation of producing any specific work or material. However, during the ACE Fellowship, artists are invited to engage with the regional community in a variety of ways. During the residency, there may be a Meet the Artists event, or other opportunities for the Chicago-based artists to interact and exchange time and talent with members of the local arts community. Trillium Arts acts as a facilitator for this “Exchange” portion of ACE, providing suggestions for pairings and introductions as necessary. Beyond any selected engagements, this is a self-directed program, and the artists determine the specific ways to use their residency time.
