Mesa Refuge: Residency

Mesa Refuge: Residency

Point Reyes Station, CA, United States

Mesa Refuge welcomes a diverse group of writers, filmmakers, audio journalists and other creatives—both emerging and established—who are defining and/or offering solutions to the pressing issues of our time. Particularly, it is our priority to support writers focusing on “ideas at the edge” in the areas of environment, social justice and economic equity. We invite you to apply for our residency. Our spring and fall residencies are two-weeks long and there is no residency fee (though you are responsible for your own travel, transportation and food).

We have two application deadlines during the year: June 1 (for the fall) and December 1 (for the following spring). We are a small nonprofit and our application fee of $50 helps underwrite the cost of application review. As an organization committed to equity, however, we do not want the application fee to be a barrier to apply. To request a fee waiver, please email us directly at info@mesarefuge.org. We contact all applicants 8-10 weeks after the application deadline.

How much of the residency experience can artists with limited mobility participate?

The Mesa Refuge has some accessibility features and we are also located on wild, natural land. To enter the house, there is one step up as you walk in the front door. There is another step up as you enter the kitchen and the downstairs bedroom wing. The house has three bedrooms, one of which is upstairs. The other two bedrooms are on the ground floor, each have private bathrooms. One of the bathrooms is mobility-ready and has many accessible features including an accessible sink, toilet and walk-in shower with mobility bars.

Please briefly describe the facilities and areas of the campus that are NOT accessible.

The grounds and gardens surrounding the property are well tended but there are many natural and rustic features throughout including uneven ground and rock pathways in the garden. As two of the studios are outside of the main house and on the grounds, this could make these two studios inaccessible to someone with limited mobility.

´acePIRAR | Palimpsest Project—Mural Painting Residency

Ciudad Autónoma, Buenos Aires, Argentina

´ace is an acronym that stands for "arte contemporáneo en expansión", which is Spanish for "expanding contemporary art". Its main mission is to promote contemporary artistic practices and the exploration of their multiple interfaces through residency programs, which are aimed at artists, curators and researchers, and promote collaborative work, exchange, debate and experimentation.

The Palimpsest Project is a mural painting residency conceived as a “work in progress”. Recovering the word palimpsest's original meaning, our terrace becomes a living organism in which the artists paint their murals by dialoguing, intervening or overlapping with the previous ones. Palimpsesto is a project in constant mutation, in which artists are encouraged to superimpose their murals or interlace them with the previous ones, achieving a new awakening of what was already on the wall. More than an individual work, the murals express the superposition of many hands, residences and artists. These actions are considered a way to embrace and, at the same time, demystify the work of the other.

This residency program is aimed at career or emerging visual artists, with a special interest in muralism and/or urban art. Groups of up to 2 members can apply together to work collaboratively. In addition, in these residencies, there is the possibility of working collectively collaborating with other residents or local artists, as well as carrying out additional projects in mural festivals or in public spaces.

Its main mission is to promote contemporary artistic practices and the exploration of their multiple interfaces through residency programs, which are aimed at artists, curators and researchers, and promote collaborative work, exchange, debate and experimentation.

micro-Residencies are mainly aimed at starting a new project, delving into an ongoing project or finishing ideas/works. Each micro-Residency intends to be different, so that each resident develops their process according to their needs. ´ace provides space and professional assistance to create new works in a short but intense period of time, an ideal format for residents who belong to academic institutions or for those who do not have availability for long periods of time, since it allows them to venture into the world of residencies in a short and intensive period.

We hold 4 open calls every year for all of our programs, the deadlines are: January 31st, April 30th, July 31st and October 31st.

Tusen Takk Foundation Artist Residency

Leland, MI, United States

Tusen Takk’s residencies are geared for artists to explore new ideas or expand current work. We look for ideas and work that will affirm and enrich the human spirit, giving form to chaos and perception to beauty.

Tusen Takk was designed to host one resident, or two in collaboration, for residencies between three and eight weeks. The single most important qualification for artists invited to Tusen Takk is that they have created a body of work that exemplifies excellence and has (or could) significantly contribute(d) to their artistic field. Tusen Takk welcomes applications from both emerging and established visual artists in photography, printmaking, sculpture, painting, textiles, as well as creative writers and music composers.

Additional Eligibility Information

Artists should be self-motivated so they can be productive in the relative isolation afforded by a residency, with a giving spirit that’s exemplified by a willingness to share insights with audiences about their work and processes. While in residence, artists are encouraged to engage with the local arts community; this could take the shape of a small-scale workshop or studio visit, or a public artist’s talk, exhibition, or performance, either virtually or in collaboration with one of the Foundation’s partner organizations.

Tusen Takk welcomes applications from both mid-career and established visual artists working in photography, printmaking, sculpture, painting, textiles, as well as creative writers and composers who have/are:

  • The ability to produce a consistent body of high-quality work

  • A dedication to their artistic practice with a desire to spend at least 30 hours a week in the studio

  • The self-motivation needed to work alone. Unless the residency is to be a collaboration between two people, the vast majority of the time the resident will be living and working in solitude

  • A willingness to engage audiences

  • An openness to sharing thoughts on their work, their practice, and their processes through Tusen Takk’s online and printed publications

  • Comfortable communicating with Tusen Takk’s English-speaking staff and audiences

  • 21 or older

  • US citizenship or the ability to obtain a US visa (if needed). Most international artists can come on a visitor visa, but certain countries do not participate in the visa waiver program. Since delays can occur, international applicants should be sure to check the visa appointment wait times. Upon offer of a residency, the Tusen Takk Foundation is able to provide letter(s) of invitation.

  • Alumni Tusen Takk artists are welcome to reapply 5 years after their last residency

Please note that we are seeking applications from artists whose practice is based in the disciplines listed above, those best supported by our current facilities. At this time, we are not accepting applications from artists proposing to work primarily in movement, dance, performance, academic research, journalism/critique, or film (editing or production).

ACA Soundscape Field Station at Canaveral National Seashore

New Smyrna Beach, FL, United States

ACA Soundscape Field Station at Canaveral National Seashore is a partnership between Atlantic Center for the Arts and Canaveral National Seashore. It is the first of its kind in the United States dedicated to preservation of natural sound, following in the tradition of other types of successful U.S. National Park Service artist-in-residence programs located in more than 100 parks throughout the country.

The goal for each artist-in-residence is to find innovative approaches that help preserve a healthy and balanced soundscape for current and future generations. This program invites sound artists, musicians, composers, field recordists, and soundscape researchers to live and work in Doris Leeper’s historic home in Canaveral National Seashore for 5 weeks.

The legacy of artist and environmentalist Doris Leeper has connected Canaveral National Seashore and Atlantic Center for the Arts for many years. Doris ‘Doc’ Leeper lived in a turn of the century home (listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places) on the banks of the Indian River Lagoon in Eldora from 1958 to 1975 where she painted and created sculptural works. She was instrumental in the creation of Canaveral National Seashore to protect the beauty of this wild coastal habitat from development.

South Porch Artists Residency

South Porch Artists Residency

Summerville, SC, United States

South Porch Artists Residency is a retreat space for working artists, scholars and clergy to pursue creative projects. Located on an historic property in downtown Summerville, SC, South Porch immerses residents in the evocative setting of a small Southern town, just half an hour from downtown Charleston. Up to six residents at a time are offered comfortable lodgings and studio work space, either in our 1835 Main House or contemporary Cottage Studio. Residents apply for stays of one, two, three or four weeks, arriving and departing on a Monday. For more information see our website: www.southporchartists.org

We believe that artists, writers, scholars and clergy – while often undervalued – provide essential services to our community, and to each of us as human beings. They uncover the universe, reveal our common humanity, expose injustice, point to reconciliation, and nurture our hearts, minds and spirits. Our mission is to support the essential work of these makers and thinkers by offering them dedicated space, time and community, and to enrich the people of the Lowcountry and our residents through personal and cultural exchange. At South Porch we are guided by the values of inclusion, community, caring and creativity.

Artists and thinkers, ages 21+, ranging from emerging to established and working in variety of genres are welcome to apply.

Marble House Project

Dorset, VT, United States

Marble House Project is a multi-disciplinary artist residency program that fosters collaboration & the exchange of ideas by providing an environment for artists across disciplines to live and work side by side. Each session hosts eight artists and is carefully curated to bring together a group of creative workers across various disciplines, who might collaborate and learn from one another. Applications . include but is not limited to visual arts, writing, choreography, music composition and performance. There are six sessions that last for three weeks. The AIR season runs from late February through mid November. Artists are selected based on the quality and commitment to their work and their project description. It is important to note that each session is specifically curated in order to maximize the art residency experience for each individual artist. All residents live together in the historic, eight-bedroom Manley-Lefevre house, which is organized around a responsibilities-sharing system, highlighting sustainability and fostering community. We provide fresh ingredients and all residents will be asked to cook dinner (in a pair) three to four times over the course of their residency. Although not required, our hope is that you will spend some time in the garden alongside your studio practice. At the end of each session, artists are invited to present their work at ART SEED. This takes the form of talks, performances and open studios.

Whitefish Bay, located on Wisconsin's Door Peninsula, has long been a creative haven for artists who were an important part of the local community and brought the process of creating art into daily life. Inspired by the history of the Dome House and the vibrant artistic community in Door County, the Al & Mickey Quinlan Artist Residency aims to give an artist the opportunity to create work in a unique environment providing inspiration and solitude. The Dome House Al & Mickey Quinlan Artist Residency is open to one artist residing in the Midwest states of Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, or South Dakota. The program aims to give artists working in the fine art mediums of drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, and other mediums the space and support to create work in an inspiring and unique location, in addition to providing opportunities for public access to an artist at work through supplemental programming and educational content for the community.

The Dome House Al & Mickey Quinlan Residency is an 8-week fall program scheduled for August 4 - September 28, 2025, created and led in partnership with the Miller Art Museum.  The deadline to apply is April 7, 2025. More information and images can be found here: https://www.domehouseart.org.
