Remembering ACA's Founding Members

ACA Communications
June 6, 2025

Artist Communities Alliance (ACA) was founded in 1991 by a coalition of 18 artist residency programs responding to a moment of urgent need. In the face of widespread cuts to public arts funding, these visionary leaders backed by startup support from the MacArthur Foundation came together to build a national consortium committed to strengthening the support systems that artists rely on to create and thrive.

Founding organizations included 500 Capp Street (formerly Capp Street Project), Atlantic Center for the Arts, Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts, Centrum, Djerassi Resident Artists Program, Fine Arts Work Center, Headlands Center for the Arts, Jacob’s Pillow, MacDowell, Mattress Factory, Millay Arts, MoMA PS1, Palenville Interarts Colony, Ragdale Foundation, Sculpture Space, Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, and Yaddo. These institutions were among the most influential residency programs of their time, many rooted in retreat-style models that offered artists the gift of time, space, and solitude.

While the founding network did not yet reflect the full range of artists, communities, and residency models that shape the field today, it laid critical groundwork for what would become a global and equity-centered alliance.

Today, ACA includes more than 300 members across all 50 U.S. states and 20 countries. Our work is driven by a deep commitment to justice, access, and care—values that continue to evolve in dialogue with our community. From that early coalition to the present day, ACA remains focused on building the conditions artists need to thrive, and on imagining a future where creative practice is supported, valued, and sustained everywhere.

Mesa Refuge Residency Application 2025

Associated Residency Program

Mesa Refuge brings transformative stories, ideas, and knowledge to the world by supporting a diverse community of writers and activists through residencies at our coastal California retreat. We welcome a diverse group of writers—both emerging and established—who define and/or offer solutions to the pressing issues of our time. Particularly, it is our priority to support writers and activists whose ideas are “on the edge”, taking on issues including (but not limited to): nature, environment and climate crisis; economic, racial and gender equity; social justice and restorative justice; immigration; health care access; housing; and more.

We especially want writers of nonfiction books, long-form journalism, audio and documentary film. Occasionally we accept poetry, fiction (Young Adult/Adult Literary), screenwriting and playwriting, photojournalism, personal memoirs (as a vehicle to tell a larger story) and graphic narrative. We tend not to accept academic writing. The potential impact and distribution of your project is also important.

We aim to support a diverse community of writers and welcome applicants that represent a broad spectrum of race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, immigration status, religion or physical ability.

Mesa Refuge is located in Point Reyes Station, CA (about 1.5 hours north of San Francisco). Our residencies are two-weeks long and there is no residency fee. Space is limited to three writers. You will need to provide your own transportation to and from the residency and most meals. Additional residency expenses like travel, transportation and food, are your responsibility.

Our application deadline is November 1, 2025 for 2026 residencies.

#ResidenciesConnect: Growing Your Backyard: Relationship-building and Networking Between Artist Residency Programs

We’re listening: it’s exhausting to operate in silos.

How do we pause, and look at our own backyards with fresh eyes for new partners, and plant seeds around the globe reaching out to new contacts? We all ask, how can we afford to take the time away from the daily fires to nurture longer term relationships? Today, we realize; we can’t afford not to. Our networks are what can sustain us through the crises, offer insights we didn’t know we could ask for, and the support we need.

Grab a beverage and join us and other ACA members for a session focused on growing our local and international networks, and settle in for a lively chat as neighbors.

Staff Suggested Beverage Pairings:
Iced Genmaicha (Japanese green tea with toasted rice) - Dani (Director of Programs)

Rose Black Tea - Crystal (Programs Coordinator)

All staff of ACA members residencies, organizations, and programs gain access to #ResidenciesConnect. These sessions provide an opportunity for members to learn from, share with, and build community with peers.

ACA is committed to providing full access to all. Please send accessibility inquiries and requests to ACA Programs Coordinator, Crystal Sasaki, at programs [at] artistcommunities.org.
