Shiro Oni Studio Artist Residency Program

Fujioka, Gunma, Japan

Away from the congested urban life of Japan and surrounded by mountains in the small town of Onishi (ogre stone) in Gunma prefecture, artists can work free from outside distractions. Shiro Oni Studio was founded with the belief that while artists produce much of their work individually, the development of ideas going into that work benefits from a strong social network.

American artist Kjell Hahn founded the residency in 2013. In 12 years the residency has hosted over 250 artists from 30 countries and has been featured in publications such as Vogue magazine, Soto Koto magazine, NHK television and Asahi, Jomo and Yomiuri newspapers. In 2021, he received an award for his international cultural exchange efforts from the governor of Gunma Prefecture.

REVIEW PROCESS

Applicants are evaluated by our Co-Directors — Eve, Bowie, and Jeff — and our Programming Director, Will. Artists are selected based on the quality of the work and how well a given piece fits alongside other pieces selected for the show.

Don’t overthink this — there’s no one thing we’re looking for, and we’re always open to creative new uses of Maxon Mills as an exhibition space.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Contact info
  • CV or publication list (3 pages max)
  • Project proposal
  • Portfolio
  • $25 application fee

PROJECT PROPOSALS

We accept four types of proposals for our 2026 Summer Programming: ready-to-hang work, site-specific installations, temporary installations/performances, and publication-specific works. Your application can include multiple proposals.

For all proposals, include:

  • A formal description of the work you would like to show.
  • A three-sentence conceptual description of the work you would like to show or your artistic practice more generally.
  • A note about any special circumstances you anticipate around the installation of your work. We have limited equipment available, so we need to know in advance if you require anything specific.

For publication-specific works:

Please explain how your work will activate the printed publication. This can range from essays, prose, or poetry to more experimental print projects. For example, our 2020 Summer Exhibition book featured essays and poetry from our artists alongside a flipbook of animation frames in the top right corner of each page and an inserted pop-up piece.

Portfolio

Provide 1 to 10 work samples, including title, year, medium, and dimensions, and anything else we should know.

Size requirements: images, up to 5MB each; video, up to 250MB each; audio, up to 30MB each; PDFs, up to 10MB each

  • If your work is time-based or has video documentation, you may also link to media from YouTube, Vimeo, and SoundCloud.

Notifications will be sent out in early December.

2020 | The Five Pillars of a Healthy Residency Framework

ACA Communications
July 3, 2025

ACA introduced the Five Pillars of a Healthy Residency framework, developed by ACA President & CEO Lisa Funderburke, as a tool for artist residencies to assess and strengthen their organizational foundations. This framework outlines five critical domains that contribute to sustainable, equitable residency environments:

1. Identity – Residencies must define their purpose, brand, and cultural impact to align their mission with their public identity.

2. Program Design – Understanding who residencies serve and how helps create programs that are meaningful, artist-centered, and inclusive.

3. Operations – Residencies need effective infrastructure, tools, and processes to ensure strategic goals are met efficiently.

4. Resource Development – Securing funding, partnerships, and human resources is essential for long-term sustainability and growth.

5. Stewardship – This pillar prioritizes care for artists, staff, communities, and the environment, ensuring ethical and sustainable practices.

By applying the Five Pillars, residencies can evaluate their strengths and weaknesses, fostering greater inclusion, accessibility, and long-term success. The framework supports “equitable capacity”—a concept that underscores the need for systemic, organization-wide efforts in equity and inclusion.

With these guiding principles, ACA helps residency programs evolve into more just, accessible, and artist-centered spaces that support creative growth while driving broader change in the arts sector.

Spring/Summer 2026

Associated Residency Program

MacDowell is an artist residency program located in the rural environment of Peterborough, New Hampshire.  Artists-in-residence need to be comfortable with a degree of solitude and disconnection from the outside world. Studios are comfortably furnished with the artists’ needs in mind. A MacDowell Fellowship consists of exclusive use of a studio, accommodations, and three prepared meals a day for two to eight weeks. There are no residency fees. Artists are responsible for materials and travel expenses. MacDowell encourages applications from artists representing the widest possible range of perspectives and demographics.

Since its founding in 1907, MacDowell has imbued its spaces with a deep and abiding respect for artists and their creative work. In the 21st century, this fundamental kindness is sustained by the curiosity, generosity, and goodwill circulating within the resident community.

While MacDowell may be thought of as a place apart from the world, the resident population will always be comprised of individuals who are of the world. MacDowell strives to offer ideal working conditions for artists within a joyful and mutually supportive environment. Consistent with that mission, all Fellows are obliged to adopt the community agreement as a condition of accepting a Fellowship. Doing so will help ensure that all Fellows may participate in the enriching exchange that has given rise to countless friendships and collaborations.

There is no cost for a MacDowell Fellowship. To open the residency to the broadest possible community of artists, MacDowell offers financial assistance programs to those who have been awarded a Fellowship. Artists may apply for stipends and travel grants only if they are awarded a MacDowell Fellowship; and funding is awarded based on demonstrated financial need. Applications for financial assistance, which are made available as part of the confirmation of acceptance to MacDowell, are kept confidential. Aviário Studio Ceramics Furniture Making Residency

Associated Residency Program

An art residency provides the technical conditions, time, and space to develop ideas and try new approaches. It is a moment that promotes connection between artists from different backgrounds and consequently the exchange of knowledge and experiences.

Aviário Studio Ceramic Furniture Making Residency aims to promote exploration and production in the field of ceramic furniture. The program is customized according to the artist’s goals regarding duration, outcome and focus. We offer the conditions to test possibilities and materialize ideas. On one hand, it can be a moment of transition, more connected to experimentation, research and learning new techniques; or it can be the point of consolidation of a project translated into the production of a new body of work.

Please note that ceramics residencies have to be at least 3 weeks, and that only small furniture will be able to be produced given that the kiln size is the following: 63cm deep x 67cm tall x 48cm wide.
