*Bobbi-Jo Starr, Wichoie Ahiya Singer Songwriter Fall 2023. Photo by Rita Taylor

Overview

“Toga da wôhnagabi” (Stories for the future) is a four-week hybrid Indigenous music residency that brings worldviews together from all four corners of Mother Earth. Watched over by Buffalo Spirit, the residency provides musicians and songwriters a transformative space to actively listen and learn from each other in story and song.

Through workshops, studio recording and live performance, the residency gives participants space to create and share their stories using language and land teachings in their music creations and performance. Artists will listen to the land speak and use those sounds along with their own Indigenous language sounds to both express and celebrate life and their unique worldviews in a life-affirming and creative gathering space.

Solo artists or duos are welcome to apply.

Description

“Toga da wôhnagabi ” (Stories for the future) Residency explores the many facets of musical creation, songwriting, and performance through land-based and embodied methodologies. Participants will:

  • Expand their performance skills, active and deep listening, and understanding of music production.
  • Engage in faculty-led workshops, group gatherings, and one-on-one sessions with senior faculty.
  • Create new works and arrangements while refining their musical abilities.
  • Have 24hr access to studios and/or music huts to focus on songwriting and performance preparation.
  • Receive a ½-day recording session to capture their work.
  • Be part of a supportive community of up to 14 peers.
  • Participate in a final music showcase, with up to 10 minutes of stage time or three creative works.

Open Call: Adaptation

At Pine Meadow Ranch Center for Arts & Agriculture, we work with artists, educators, researchers and Tribal members to support the long-term resilience of the local ecosystem. As stewards of the land, we rely on a deep understanding of the local ecology and the application of time-tested techniques to conserve natural resources and maintain the fertile conditions in which life can flourish. Understanding how different entities within the ecosystem interact and coexist at PMRCAA has allowed us to preserve the ranching tradition and maintain agricultural land. Our hope is to restore PMRCAA’s soil by understanding the diverse web of relationships responsible for maintaining its fertility.

By embracing a more expansive perspective that recognizes the power of diverse ways of knowing and being, we concern ourselves with how to instill ethical relations of production and explore the role artists, culture bearers, scientists, scholars, and researchers play in nourishing radical imagination and facilitating transformative change.

International Artist Residency, Spring 2026

Residency dates: March 3 - 31, 2026

LNAF's international residency offer up to ten artists the opportunity to live and work at the Château de La Napoule complex. These residencies focus on individual artistic expression and exploration. At the core is a belief in the value of the shared experience of personal, professional, and artistic discovery that takes place within a supportive environment of peers. Residencies are open to all artistic genres.

Residents are housed in single rooms in the recently renovated Villa Marguerite, located across a small street from the Château, or in the Château itself. Rooms are equipped with private baths and each has sea or garden views. Wireless internet is available throughout. Linen service is provided weekly. There is a washing machine, dryer, and clothesline at the Villa for residents’ use.

LNAF provides breakfast and dinner on weekdays. Meals are often held in the Château’s gothic dining room, providing the opportunity for exchange and community. For lunches and weekend meals, residents have full access to the kitchen in the Villa Marguerite to store and prepare their own food. The village of La Napoule also offers numerous restaurants and cafés just a few blocks from the Villa and Château.

LNAF provides each resident with a stipend, plus a studio space in which to work. Studios are located throughout the Château property, some inside the castle and some in towers on its grounds. Artists are asked to address any specific requirements for studio space in their applications.
