Call for Proposals: Winter 2026 Thematic Residencies at Gibraltar Point

Gibraltar Point Centre for the Arts seeks applications for its first ever call for thematic residencies. The themes and subject matter for proposed programs is open and we are eager to receive proposals that focus on diverse voices and experiences, sustainability, connections to land (specifically Toronto Island) and new media in natural spaces.

Application Deadline: Monday, April 28, 2025 at 5pm EST

Proposed Program Periods:

  • Between January 1 and April 30, 2026
  • Between October 1 and December 21, 2026

This call is open to international artists, writers and educators working in most media looking to facilitate a thematic residency.

Please note: the Centre is not equipped to support wood or metal working, ceramic or glass kiln firing and has limited support for movement and music practices. The selected residency program(s) may include a public facing or community engaged component within the program’s scheduled dates.

Experience running a residency program or similar creative project is recommended.

A maximum of up to 3 proposals from facilitators will be accepted to host a residency at Gibraltar Point Centre for the Arts for the 2026 winter season: between January 1 to April 30, 2026, or October 1 to December 21, 2026.

What is a Thematic Residency?

Thematic residencies are programmed residencies that bring together up to 18 artists to work around a specific theme led by a facilitator/curator. Participants explore new modes of thought in a variety of collaborative settings.

Oak Spring Garden Foundation: Interdisciplinary Residency Program - 2026

Associated Residency Program

The goal of this program is to provide individuals with the time and space to pursue their own creative projects alongside other Residents who may be examining plants, landscapes, gardens, and the natural world from different perspectives. Artists, conservation practitioners, researchers, scholars, scientists, and/or writers are encouraged to apply to our Interdisciplinary Residency Program. This is our flagship Residency program that was started in 2021.  Now, in 2025, we have hosted over 200 Interdisciplinary Residents, and we plan to award about 50 Interdisciplinary Residencies annually. We hope our Residents will develop meaningful relationships around shared creative interests, and find abundant inspiration while at OSGF.

Interdisciplinarity is a key value of OSGF, and this Residency provides ample opportunities for Residents to explore our various resources.  Beyond the time devoted to their projects, an Interdisciplinary Resident’s typical day at Oak Spring might include a walk to enjoy the landscape or birds; an appointment to visit the Oak Spring Library; and/or a morning spent volunteering at the BCCF or in the formal garden.  These optional activities provide Residents time to learn from, and interact with our staff.  None of these kinds of activities are required, and we understand that many Residents might want to spend most of their time in their writing or studio space.  This program supports varying Residents, needs, and strikes a balance of socialization, and independent work time.

Residents are not required to make work that addresses our site specifically, but they should work on projects related to OSGF’s mission.  We often find that Residents who use their time for research and inspiration are most satisfied with this Residency experience.

Additional Eligibility Information

We recognize that individuals may be at different stages in their lives when they arrive at a point where a dedicated period of focused activity may be helpful for their work. There is no expectation that residents be at a particular point in their career to apply for this residency. We do, however, expect that residents be considerate, able to live with a housemate who might be in a different stage than themselves, and residents must be interested in interacting with the other members of their cohort, as well as other program participants who might be at OSGF.

The application portal is now open and will close May 31st, 2025. Please note that there is one application for all of our 2025 Residency and Fellowship programs, and you will be prompted to select which programs you would like to be considered for. You will be asked to submit:

  1. a resume/curriculum vitae (not to exceed two pages),
  2. a 200 - 300 word statement on your artistic practice,
  3. a 200 - 300 word statement about how your work relates to Oak Spring Garden Foundation’s mission to “perpetuate and share the gifts of Rachel (“Bunny”) Lambert Mellon, including her residence, garden, estate and the Oak Spring Garden Library, to serve the public interest. OSGF is dedicated to inspiring and facilitating scholarship and public dialogue on the history and future of plants, including the culture of gardens and landscapes and the importance of plants for human well-being,”
  4. a 200 word or less response to the prompt: Please describe a time that you were part of a community. What role did you serve in the community, and what aspects of being in community did you enjoy the most?
  5. work samples

For visual artists: 5 - 10 images, please include the dimensions, year, medium, and title of each work sample.
For creative non-fiction, fiction, essayists, or other writers: 7 - 10 pages total that demonstrate your current interests. Please use 12-point font, 1-inch margins, and double-space your writing sample.  Do not include photocopies of published work, title pages, tables of contents or HYPERLINKS.  Please be sure to state the genre of the work sample.
For time-based artists, including: filmmakers, musicians, dancers, and performance artists: 10 minutes cumulatively of work samples.  OSGF encourages video files to be uploaded directly to Submittable, but when necessary, we also accept links to vimeo or other external sites as long as the appropriate passwords are provided.
For poets and playwrights: you may submit 7 - 10 pages total.  Poetry may be spaced as needed, and scripts should follow standard script formatting.

Eliza Moore Fellowship for Artistic Excellence | 2026

Associated Residency Program

The Eliza Moore Fellowship for Artistic Excellence is awarded annually to one outstanding, early-career artist who is developing new works that address plants, gardens, or landscapes in the broad sense.  This award is open to visual artists, literary artists, dancers, and musicians. The award includes a $10,000 individual grant and requires a 2 - 5 week stay at Oak Spring. While at OSGF, the Fellow will be able to meet with staff, explore our 700-acre landscape and our efforts in sustainable land management, and visit our rare book library that holds over 19,000 objects, including many examples of botanical art.

OSGF intends to award the Fellowship to an exceptional artist whose works show remarkable promise to contribute to a deeper understanding of the natural world, and humankind’s place in it.  The Fellow will be scheduled to visit when there are other Interdisciplinary Residents or Fellows on-site. This scheduling will allow the Fellow to join in communal meals, and optional activities and field trips with other artists, ecologists, researchers, or scholars working on projects related to OSGF’s mission. Beyond time devoted to their projects, a Fellow’s typical day at Oak Spring might include a walk to enjoy the landscape or birds; an appointment to visit the Oak Spring Library; and/or a morning spent volunteering at the BCCF or in the formal garden.  These optional activities provide Fellows time to learn from, and interact with our staff.  None of these activities are required, and we understand that some Fellows might want to spend most of their time in their writing or working independently. We support and enable Fellows to use their time as they best see fit.

At the culmination of their stay, we encourage, but don’t require, Fellows to give a 20 – 30 minute presentation with time for questions, to Oak Spring staff and any other Fellows, Residents, or program participants who might be on site.

Sheepscot Arts Preserve is a new artist residency center that is dedicated to supporting Visionary, Outsider and Narrative (Visual) Artists of all disciplines with an emphasis on visual artists. We are located on 42 beautiful acres bordering the Sheepscot River in Alna, Maine. The center provides group and individual artist residencies, free of cost. We also provide some, to all, of the meals depending on the type of residency you attend. We especially encourage self-taught artists and marginalized artists to apply but welcome everyone who feels as if our residency is the right fit.

Our housing includes year round yurts, an off-grid cabin, and bedrooms in the 1800's farmhouse. Each artist has their own studio space to work and access to all communal areas on the property. Our studio spaces change depending on the needs of the artists in residence but are located throughout the different buildings on the property, including the yurts and the large timber frame barn. We are in a quiet rural area and  have hiking trails that wind throughout the property.

We offer stipends to offset the cost of travel/loss of work for those who can't attend without one.

We have a suggested donation to cover our costs but our program is free to all, and your choice of donation is not part of our selection process.

Aviário Studio Tiles Residency 2026

Associated Residency Program

An art residency provides the technical conditions, time, and space to develop ideas and try new approaches. It is a moment that promotes connection between artists from different backgrounds and consequently the exchange of knowledge and experiences.

Aviário Studio Ceramic Tiles Residency aims to promote exploration and production in the field of ceramic tiles. The program is customized according to the artist’s goals regarding duration, outcome and focus.  We offer the conditions to test possibilities and materialize ideas. On one hand, it can be a moment of transition, more connected to experimentation, research and learning new techniques; or it can be the point of consolidation of a project translated into the production of a new body of work.

Please note that ceramics residencies have to be at least 3 weeks.

2025 Visiting Artist in Residence Dr. Byran Massey Sr. - Woodworking on the Land

Associated Residency Program

Summer 2025 Visiting Artist

July 7-11, 2025

Dr. Bryan Winfred Massey, Sr. will be the first guest Visiting Artist at Kindred Creative Residence + Agro-ForesT. He will be teaching a week-long wood carving workshop for artist of all levels.

Dr. Bryan Winfred Massey, Sr. was born in Goldsboro, North Carolina in 1960. He is currently the Chair of the Department of Art & Design and a Professor of Art/Sculptor/Designer at the University of Central Arkansas, Conway. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from East Carolina University in Greenville, NC; his Master of Fine Arts from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, LA. He completed his Doctorate of Education at the University of Arkansas, Little Rock in Higher Education Administration.

Bryan began his career figuratively, but now works with both the figurative and abstract. His recent combinations of stone and steel have begun to carry him to a higher dimension in his work.

“My work for years has been focused on creating interesting works of art that deal with social, political, cultural and spiritual issues. In my work, I want the viewer to experience the raw emotions that I experienced in the creative process whether it is stone, steel or cast metal."

During this week long course offering participants will have the opportunity to camp out on the land, eat plant based meals, and learn about the connection between art, nature, and our creativity.
