Longfellow Emerging Artist Fellowship

Portland, ME, United States

The Longfellow Emerging Artist Fellowship (LEAF) is a bold new initiative from One Longfellow Square, created to support early-career, Maine-based musicians in building sustainable, fulfilling lives as working artists. Launching in January 2026, the fellowship offers time, space, and community for five artists to focus deeply on their craft while gaining momentum in their professional journeys.

Rooted in equity and shaped by conversations with artists and cultural leaders across Maine, LEAF is designed to meet real needs—offering not just opportunity, but meaningful support. By investing in local talent and providing a platform for growth, LEAF aims to strengthen Maine’s creative ecosystem and help launch the next generation of voices onto the national stage.

In addition to community and visibility, each LEAF Fellow will receive:

  • Free access to OLS venue space for rehearsals, recordings, workshops, and creative development
  • Multiple paid performance opportunities
  • $5,000 stipend for travel, equipment, living expenses, and new works
  • Tailored marketing and portfolio support, including media introductions and website guidance
  • Weekend retreat in rural Maine for reflection, collaboration, and creative reset
  • Workshops and masterclasses with working musicians
  • Connections to a growing network of presenters, venues, mentors, and professional organizations

  • Be a current Maine resident at the time of application and throughout the fellowship period.
  • Be 18 years of age or older at the time of application.
  • Identify as an “emerging” artist. While we understand this term can be subjective, we are looking for artists who are early in their professional music career, are developing their unique voice, and demonstrate significant potential for growth and impact. This typically means you are not yet widely recognized nationally or internationally, have not regularly performed in rooms/venues exceeding a capacity of 50-100, and are actively seeking opportunities for professional development and exposure.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to their musical practice and a clear vision for how the fellowship will support their artistic development.
  • Be available to participate in fellowship activities within the Greater Portland area and across the state of Maine, which may include mentorship sessions, workshops, an artist retreat, and public performances/presentations throughout the fellowship period.

Grantmaking Grows the Field, One Artist, One Residency at a Time

ACA Communications
August 1, 2025

Artist residencies can be life-changing for artists and the organizations that host them. At Artist Communities Alliance (ACA), we know that meaningful placements don’t happen by chance — they’re built through trust, shared values, and sustained support.

That’s why ACA’s grantmaking is different.

Through our work with initiatives like the McKnight Fellowship Residency and MacColl Johnson Fellowship Fund, we fund placements that build intentional relationships between artists and host organizations, rooted in mutual respect, care, and accountability.

For artists, this might mean a first-time residency experience at places like Art Omi, Montalvo Arts Center, or Millay Arts. These residencies are so much more than just a studio, they offer time to reflect, connect, and grow. We’ve supported artists in accessing meaningful, paid opportunities that recognize their and honor their experience, not just their output.

For residency organizations, it’s a chance to host artists they may not have previously reached — artists from underrepresented geographies, disciplines, or cultural communities — and to deepen their own practices of equity and access. We’ve seen residencies revise their application processes, shift curatorial frameworks, and build ongoing collaborations with past grantees.

The real impact goes beyond any single residency.

We’ve witnessed artists become deeply involved in their residency's community, develop work made during their time there, and launch new community projects shaped by the support they received. We’ve seen residencies grow their networks, rethink their values, and make long-term commitments to inclusive practices — all beginning with a single placement.

Thanks to your support, ACA has funded artists, supported residencies, and expanded a model of grantmaking that's collaborative, reparative, and built to last. You help us strengthen the entire ecosystem — creating a more resilient, inclusive, and artist-centered future, one relationship at a time.

But the work isn’t done.

If you believe in a residency field where artists of all backgrounds can thrive, we invite you to be part of this movement. Your donation helps ACA continue to offer vital support, develop new tools, and grow a field-wide culture of equity and care. Make a gift today to sustain this field-changing work.

Together, we’re not just responding to the moment. We’re building the future.

Interwoven: Art and Ecology of the Island

Toronto, ON, Canada

Program Dates: February 9-17, 2026

Interwoven invites artists working with natural materials and processes to come together in an immersive setting, engaging with the landscape and stories of the island. The residency will focus on sustainable craft traditions such as spoon carving, loom weaving, willow and dogwood basketry, natural pigment making, painting, fabric dyeing, broom making, and natural sculpture.

This residency will bring together up to 18 artists to explore how craft, ecology, and place intersect. Participants will work with natural materials sourced ethically from the landscape, engage in skill-sharing, and create works that reflect the rhythms, resilience, and interconnectivity of the island’s ecosystems.

2026 Theodore B. Olson Memorial Fellowship and Residency

Write On, Door County is pleased to offer the Theodore B. Olson Memorial Fellowship to a writer whose work focuses on how equal protection under the law is an inherent, sacred right belonging to all of our citizens and must therefore be robustly protected and applied. Applications for the Theodore B. Olson Memorial Fellowship are accepted from writers--emerging to established--working in any genre, including journalism. The fellowship includes a two-week residence at Write On in late August/early September each year. For 2026, the dates are Sunday, August 30 through Sunday, September 13. The fellowship will provide a stipend of $700 along with funds to assist with travel and a grocery allowance.

The selected writer will participate in a public event to be arranged in consultation with Write On's Artistic Director during the time of the residency.

Open Call - Sardinia Island, Italy (2026)

Associated Residency Program

Nocefresca is the first active and permanent artistic residency program in Sardinia. It is a house that welcomes creative professionals from all over the world to the rural villages of Sardinia for research and creative experimentation, involving both participants and local communities in a cultural exchange experience.
By inviting a limited number of artists in areas far from the tourist coasts, Nocefresca creates a sustainable experience able to contribute to the territory and support it in the periods when it experiences less tourist flow and it is therefore the most authentic and beautiful.

The residency is primarily self-directed and, as an artist, you are expected to be self-sufficient in your practice. However, Nocefresca organises some activities to help you fuel your artistic process:

– Presentation of each one’s practice to the group
– Individual and group meetings with the curator for assistance and feedback
– Opportunity to propose site-specific projects, talks and workshops
– Final open-studio event, open to the public
- Every month, a local person of our choosing takes the artists to his/her favourite places in the village of Milis and outside of it (transportation included)
– Screening of films, visiting artists and social activities with the local community are extra activities that can happen spontaneously during the residency

Extra trips (beaches, nature, archeological sites, towns ecc) are not included and a car is necessary if you want to access them easily, as public transport only connects some of the main centers and rarely goes to natural spots.

Nocefresca is great for writers, photographers, multi-disciplinary artists, visual artists, designers, composers and creative nomads. We have a series of basic equipment and some classic hardware; you are expected to provide any specific tools and materials you might need. People either travel with them, send them as a package beforehand (2-4 weeks if from another continent) or buy them locally or online (1-3 days shipping from Italy).  We schedule curatorial assistance at the beginning and at the end of the residency, but we are always happy to visit your studio, exchange ideas or give some practical help. We can also help you organize a specific meeting with the community, facilitate interactions, put you in contact with local artists or recommend a less-known location. We cannot however drive you around, so you are expected to be autonomous if you need to visit artists in other villages/cities or want to explore a particular area.

Equitable Capacity Is Transforming the Artist Residency Field — Help Us Keep Building It

ACA Communications
July 25, 2025

What does it take to create a residency program where artists and staff not only have access—but truly belong? At Artist Communities Alliance (ACA), we believe it requires more than new programs. It requires new capacities.

Coined by ACA President & CEO Lisa Funderburke in 2020, equitable capacity is the muscle an organization builds to embed equity across all policies, practices, and processes. It’s not a checklist or a single initiative. It’s a sustained, reflective commitment to transforming culture, from the inside out.

Through our 2021–2023 strategic plan, ACA placed equitable capacity at the heart of our work. In doing so, we invited our network into a shared project: to build a residency field that is inclusive, just, joyful, and accessible.

We operationalized this vision through the Five Pillars of a Healthy Residency—a field-tested, adaptable framework that helps organizations assess and grow their equity practice across five core areas: Identity, Program Design, Operations, Resource Development, and Stewardship. This tool is already reshaping how residencies think about climate, culture, and change—and it’s helping them make that change sustainable.

As part of this initiative, ACA has held Equitable Capacity Workshops over the last five years to provide a learning space designed specifically for residency staff, board members, and stakeholders eager to deepen their equity practice. Grounded in the Five Pillars framework, these workshops have supported organizations in developing shared language, building trust across teams, and applying equity principles to real-world scenarios. Participants leave with practical tools, peer support, and a renewed sense of accountability. The impact is tangible: many organizations report shifts in how they lead, listen, design programs, and how they show up for artists.

Thanks to your support, ACA has provided in-depth training, tools, and funding to help residencies develop equitable capacity, from shifting governance models to strengthening access for BIPOC, Deaf, and disabled artists.

2023 | Mellon Grant Awarded to ACA

ACA Communications
July 24, 2025

ACA received a transformative $3 million grant from the Mellon Foundation, significantly enhancing our ability to support artist residencies and advance equity-driven initiatives. This funding has allowed ACA to expand internal capacity, ensuring that we can more effectively serve the residency field and strengthen our long-term impact.

A key outcome of this grant is the development of a new award system that recognizes artist residency programs committed to actively building their equitable capacity. These awards highlight organizations that demonstrate leadership in fostering inclusion, accessibility, and justice within their residencies, reinforcing ACA’s vision for a more equitable and sustainable arts ecosystem.

In addition to direct support for residencies, the Mellon grant has bolstered ACA’s research efforts, allowing the organization to explore, document, and advance restorative practices in the arts sector. Through this work, ACA is contributing to broader cultural shifts, helping the field reimagine policies and practices that create lasting change.

By combining direct investment in residency programs with research and advocacy, ACA is using this funding to drive systemic transformation. The Mellon Foundation’s support ensures that ACA can continue to lead the residency field toward greater equity, sustainability, and innovation, empowering artists and arts organizations to thrive in an evolving landscape.

2021 | Equitable Capacity Workshops Launched

ACA Communications
July 17, 2025

ACA launched the Equitable Capacity Workshops (ECW) as part of our commitment to fostering inclusive, just, and accessible artist residencies. These three-hour intensive sessions provide practical tools and strategies for residency staff, leadership, and board members to develop and implement equitable policies, processes, and practices within their organizations.

Designed with a trauma-informed approach, ECW address key areas of equity, including artist outreach and selection, accessibility for disabled artists, and equitable engagement in rural contexts. Participants take part in interactive discussions, assessments, and action planning, ensuring that they can immediately apply these insights within their residency programs.

The workshops align with ACA’s Five Pillars of a Healthy Residency, a framework guiding organizations in assessing and strengthening their identity, program design, operations, resource development, and stewardship. By using this adaptable structure, residencies gained clear pathways for improving inclusivity and sustainability in their programming.

Open to both ACA members and non-members, ECW help expand access to equity-building resources across the residency field. Through this initiative, ACA reinforces its commitment to ensuring that all artist residencies are equipped to cultivate environments where artists and staff can thrive, advancing long-term structural change and equitable capacity across the sector.
