2026 Art/Sci Awarded Residency

Associated Residency Program

All of PLAYA’s programs focus on expanding and deepening the field of art and science to empower the human motivation necessary for a healthy and whole future on this planet. We believe if human society is to maintain vibrancy of culture and biodiversity, it needs new ways of seeing the world. Surrounded by the richness of both the Fremont National Forest and BLM public lands, PLAYA’s programs provide ample space for study, exploration and inspiration within the high desert’s living laboratory.

Art/Sci Awarded Residencies are funded opportunities available through an application process and awarded to artists and scientists actively working to promote dialogue and positive environmental change. Residents are awarded a residency in a cohort made up of 6-10 artists and scientists spanning many disciplines. Residents stay in 1- or 2-bedroom cabins free of charge, and are responsible for their own travel costs and food while they are in residence. PLAYA is open to international and domestic applicants as long as eligibility requirements are met.

Applicants may choose a 5-, 11-, 17- or 25-night session. Most residency sessions begin on a Thursday and end on a Monday. We cannot accommodate custom residency dates, so applicants must choose from the dates available.  We are very happy to continue the more accessible 5-night residency option for residents who have commitments that make longer periods of time away from home harder to accomodate.

Two references are required for this application.

PLAYA’s 76-acre campus sits alongside an intermittent desert lake which is 10 miles wide and 20 miles long. The campus is made up of the Commons building (where the only wi-fi on campus can be accessed), 6 cabins, 2 live/work units with attached studios, 2 homes for staff, three studios, and a small music studio.

PLAYA is in a remote, rural area of Oregon with wide open vistas and opportunities for field explorations in rich natural settings. Bend, Oregon, is two hours north and Lakeview is one hour south of PLAYA. Paisley with a population of 225 is 17 miles from PLAYA. Summer Lake consists of a gas station, small market, post office and rest area.  PLAYA recognizes that living in a remote and rural community can be challenging. If you have any questions about whether PLAYA is the best fit for you, please review our 2025 Know Before You Go Handbook. Additionally, if you have questions about the residency accommodations, please see the Cabins page of our website. For questions about the application process listed below, please call 541.943.3983 or email programs@playasummerlake.org.

While the term “mid-career” is up to interpretation, we consider artists aged 30 years old or older, having a significant body of works spanning several years, with minimum 10 years of experience as professional artist, and minimum two solo exhibitions, as “mid-career”. They are often without current gallery representation.
  • Artists must be 30 years old or older.
  • We invite female-identifying and/or non-binary artists to apply.
  • Our 2025 residency theme is Peace-Building.
  • KODA does not provide housing, transportation, or visa sponsorship.
  • We do not accept applications from students currently enrolled in school.
  • We do not require a BA, MA, BFA, or MFA.
  • We do not yet accept applications from collectives/collaborative groups.
  • We require the artist to devote a minimum of 20 hours per month to the Artist Residency.
  • We require Artists-in-Residence to participate in open studios at least once during their residency term.
  • We require Artists-in-Residence to attend monthly residency meetings.

Selection process: We will be accepting two Artists-in-Residence for the Fall 2025 Peace-Building season. A jury of experts in the field, and KODA staff and board will take part in the selection process. Short-listed candidates will be notified by May 15, 2025. Accepted candidates will be notified by May 25, 2025, and announced on May 31, 2025.

Walking & Art: More Discussions At The Wayside

Walking & Art: More Discussions At The Wayside

Contemporary art has a long-established and well-documented relationship to walking. Whether used as a technique for drawing lines on the Earth, or a way of asserting collective sovereignty on stolen land, walking is now accepted as one of the many ways that artists make work. It is also, and equally, deployed as a method in neighbouring disciplines within the arts, humanities and social sciences. As such, it is always subject to new academic and cultural “turns” as they emerge.

Walking is also intrinsic to many of the quotidian, spiritual, philosophical, social and political aspects of our lives and provokes myriad questions for us as artists. We acknowledge that there are archetypal conventions of “walking art” that do not adequately represent the extent of interest or investment in walking as a practice, or the questions that walking may invoke for artists right now.

This residency is open to any, and all, approaches to walking as art, and encourages participants to grapple with the questions that arise for all those who have a stake in this area of artistic practice.

This residency gives you the opportunity to bring these questions to the fore, and to work through them, in practical ways, among your peers. We invite you to share insights and experiences, and to address with us the questions that arise from your practice with us, and with other participants. We encourage you to take full advantage of the opportunities presented for working beyond the studios.

Founded in 2015 on the Toronto Islands, Alchemy’s pillars are food, art, garden and table — all inspired by the original gardens and community at the Centre. Shared meals, artist talks, studio visits, and dialogue with community members and guest artists all contribute to a magical inspiring time in as magical setting. This Residency is designed for artists to focus on their practice in a respectful and supportive studio environment. Participating artists will be encouraged to cultivate new directions in their work, experiment with process and materiality techniques, and direct their research, activities, and time in collaboration with other visiting artists.

Gibraltar Point Centre for the Arts is a peaceful artist retreat nestled against the magnificent backdrop of Toronto Island – the largest car-free community in North America and 15 minutes by ferry to Toronto’s downtown core.
