MASS MoCA: Early Application for July 2026 - June 2027 Residencies

Associated Residency Program

The Studios is MASS MoCA’s artist and writers residency program situated within the museum’s factory campus and surrounded by the beautiful Berkshire Mountains. Operated by MASS MoCA’s Assets for Artists program, the residency runs year-round and hosts up to 10 artists at a time. Artists of any nationality can apply for stays of 2-4 weeks.

We offer great studio space and housing (private rooms in shared apartments), one  meal per day, member-access to MASS MoCA's galleries, and access to professional development webinars though our "Assets for Artists" program.

The special “early application” opportunity (offered twice per year, Dec. 1 – Feb. 1 and June 1 – Aug. 1) is strictly for artists who could benefit from additional lead time to plan their stay, with announcements typically made 9 months – 15 months before the session being awarded, making it easier to apply for outside funding from sources such as a university employer or an international or regional arts council.

Artists applying via the Early Application will NOT be considered for MASS MoCA’s financial aid budget or fellowships, so you should only use the Early Application if you are confident of being able to secure the funds to pay at our full rate of $650 per week. A limited number of Early Application slots are available each season, so this is also a highly competitive process, even though the overall number of early applicants is much lower. Having an appropriate and likely-to-be-successful funding plan is critical.

If offered a residency from the early application process, you will receive a formal letter of invitation to support any grant-writing efforts. A 50% deposit is due no later than 6 months prior to the start of your residency session, so select your preferred dates accordingly. If you are unsuccessful in securing the necessary funds to attend, then you can give up the slot without penalty up until 6 months prior to the start of your residency while there is still time for us to award the slot to someone on our waitlist.

Inner Vision, Photography and Mixed Arts, Small Cyclades Islands 2025

Associated Residency Program

The place of the classroom and rest is Schinoussa island. The action will take place in the Small Cyclades inslands, Schinoussa, Iraklia, Kato Koufonisi, Keros and South Naxos islands. (the transportation costs are not including)

Participants are those interested in art & photography, regardless of previous knowledge.

The theme research is based on photography an image that reflects our inner vision but also reflects other forms of art expression.

Every new place is a search into the unknown. The small Cyclades is the heart of the Aegean Sea, rising as a new horizon before our imagination. Using our qualities to open ourselves to the sense of seeing, we will approach the beauty of reality as it is.

The main content is daily peripatetic. We will visit each place to share our presence, perception and research skills. Daily part of the content is also meditation, breathing sessions and other techniques to cultivate inner presence.

Generally, the logic of the seminar is based on the study of each day's image and the other hand on the natural development of a critical eye. Everyone submits their art attempts to everyone's gaze but simultaneously exercisesobjectivity by watching the work of others.

The seminar has two parts: The daily tour and the daily selection of images. The continuous practice, without distractions, as well as the daily selection of images, achieves the combination of practice and theory, giving at the same time a taste of the continuous flow of artistic practice in our lives. Searching and approaching different topics sharpens the critical eye and leads to deeper analyses and discussions.

The seminar results will be prepared for display on the last day and will be ready for publication by the photographers for their personal development.

Live/Work Residency in Lower Garden District, New Orleans

Associated Residency Program

This is a live/work residency that is embedded in a small (9-room) hospitality business called Travelers New Orleans.

New Orleans, like most cities, has become increasingly unaffordable for artists and others who seek to live creatively. At Travelers New Orleans, artists are provided housing on the third (top) level of a light-filled three-bedroom, two-bath apartment in the Lower Garden District neighborhood. A fourth room is available for office/limited studio space. Artists help run the hospitality business by committing to work about 15 (paid) hours per week, and the hospitality business, in turn, funds the residency. Hours may vary depending on season, but 15 is a solid average.

Artists are encouraged to create onsite (there are some space limitations) and there are opportunities to showcase work in the lobby gallery, which looks on out world-famous Magazine Street. The goal of this residency is to provide an affordable, creative, supportive environment for artists at any stage of their careers.

Associated Residency Program

End-of-Year at Dorland!-See  Cottage Availability

Hurry--only a few late fall and winter openings available! The air is crisp and cool with sunny afternoons-the perfect time to write, make art or music.

Dorland Mountain Arts is a beautiful retreat where artists, writers, musicians, and composers can create in a secluded and protected natural setting. Dorland is located near Temecula Valley Wine Country, about 100 miles south of Los Angeles and sixty miles north of San Diego.

Individual cottages are complete with WiFi, window AC, good cell phone reception, kitchen, bathroom, workspace, and a covered porch with magnificent mountain, canyon and Temecula Valley views. One cottage includes a Steinway baby grand piano and another has a Kimball baby grand.

The Community Arts Center provides a library with Dorland works and a large writing desk with a typewriter, a meeting room, and a studio room with room for painting, exploring cyanotypes, and a small printing press for visual artists.

The extensive grounds feature a reflecting pond, a small lake with a rowboat, and hiking trails that wind through the property.

Dorland invites residency requests from visual, literary (or other writing) and composing or performing artists. Residency stays may be as short as one week or as long as 6 weeks, based on requests and availability.

Fine Arts Work Center Visual Arts Fellowship

Provincetown, MA, United States

Since its creation 50 years ago, the Fine Arts Work Center Fellowship has become one of the leading residency programs in the world.

Each year, the Work Center offers 20 seven-month residencies to a juried group of emerging visual artists, fiction writers, and poets. Each Fellow receives an apartment, a studio (for visual artists), and a monthly stipend of $1,250 plus an exit stipend of $1,000. Residencies run from October 1 through April 30. During this time, Fellows have the opportunity to pursue their work independently in a diverse and supportive community of peers.

The Fine Arts Work Center has hosted more than 1,000 Fellows since 1968, nurturing an accomplished and far-reaching alumni network. The impact of the experience is best illustrated by the extensive list of awards Fellows have gone on to win, including the Guggenheim Fellowship, MacArthur Fellowship, Prix de Rome, Pulitzer Prize, and the Nobel Prize in Literature.
