Cow House Studios

Enniscorthy, Co. Wexford, Ireland

Cow House Studios artist residencies have provided studio space for professional visual artists working in any discipline. These residencies offer a valuable platform for emerging, mid-career, and established artists. Furthermore, our residency program brings critically engaging contemporary artwork to our rural locality, expands our community, and informs our educational programming. We are committed to creating a welcoming and supportive environment for artists to explore and challenge new ideas, facilitating individual research and interdisciplinary exchange.

Artists share our large, adaptable studio allowing them to become acquainted with and challenged by one another's work. Additionally, artists are provided with comfortable private accommodation where participants regularly enjoy great meals and conversation. Over the years, we have changed and expanded our offerings to include residences designed for artists at all levels, educators, and curators. Our regular programming now comprises three main programs. These are our Open Residency Programme, our Parenting Artist Residency (PAR), and our annually themed curated residency.

In addition to our recurring residencies, we continue to develop new programming in collaboration with key national and international organizations and artists working independently in Ireland and abroad. These partnerships offer unique opportunities for the exhibition and publication of new works and professional development through facilitated

Celestial Inspiration - Annual Perseids Meteors - AUGUST 2025

Associated Residency Program

Celestial inspiration in this light pollution free zone is one of the best reasons to spend time here for a residency. And during the day you can hug donkeys, take walks into a rural rolling hill landscape, and sink into a different pace of life. The meteor shower peaks August 12 - 13, 2025. The full moon is August 9th and the new moon is August 23rd which will provide dark skies for general star-gazing.

That means the annual Perseids Meteor Shower should be on your bucket list especially if you live in an urban environment. These are evenings where you'll want to be up late, hang out in an adirondack or on the porch and gaze at the colorful action. "The Perseids is one of the best meteor showers to observe, producing up to 60 meteors per hour at its peak. It is produced by comet Swift-Tuttle, which was discovered in 1862. The Perseids are famous for producing a large number of bright meteors. The shower runs annually from July 17 to August 24."  -seasky.org

If 'summer' is the only time you can get on the road for a residency or retreat, then consider spending a week or two in the foothills of Appalachia where you can venture daily to our private spot on the Buffalo River. If nature is your muse, inspiration, or collaborator, then you will want to relish in the lusciousness of the environment at our rural location. Many from outside the area typically comment on how green it is here. By August, some of the leaves will start to change as the days are shorter, but it's still a time to connect to your inner child feeling the last bits of 'summer'.

If you are in academics, get one last dose of creative flexibility and freedom before another academic year envelopes you.

Take advantage of the low light pollution in this special area called the Western Highland Rim of mid-south Tennessee. Make sure to take time to star-gaze!

Minimum stay is one week. Apply today to secure your spot for this year's star-gazing residency opportunity. Visit the program f.a.q. page for more information.

Additional Eligibility Information

Let your creativity FLOW LIKE THE BUFFALO river on the edge of our acreage. Applicants with nature as their muse, inspiration, or collaborator will receive priority.

Individuals must be able to let the normal world and lifestyle go during your stay and it is encouraged that you utilize the time and access to the benefits of being away from contemporary society. If you cannot go a day without your favorite coffee shop visit, have fast food on the brain, or need lots of people around to function, this is not the place for you.

Be prepared for a different sense of time here and your project goals may actually go faster because you don't have your normal life distractions. Please review the policies and other information about the place on the main website www.sarasvati.space including a blog about past participants.

2026 Residencies

A quiet studio. A beautiful setting. Time for inspiration.

Saltonstall offers free stipend-supported residencies to artists and writers who are current residents of New York State and/or one of the Indian Nations located therein. Our residencies are designed for those looking for a quiet, supportive environment in which to focus on their craft.

We offer 1- to 4-week sessions between late-May and late-October. Our facilities are wheelchair friendly and include a private suite for a personal care assistant.

In addition to our traditional 2- to 4-week residencies, we offer shorter 1-week residencies (one in early June, one in late-October) that are dedicated to artist/writer parents with at least one dependent child under the age of 18 at home and to full-time caregivers. These sessions are designed for the individual artist/caregiver alone. We are not able to accommodate children, spouses, partners, or collaborators.

Our categories include:

  • Poetry
  • Creative Nonfiction
  • Photography (film or digital) & Filmmaking
  • Painting | Sculpture | Visual Arts

Each residency session includes the same combination of five artists and writers: one poet, one prose writer, one photographer or filmmaker, and two visual artists. These residencies are designed for individual artists and writers; we cannot accommodate collaborations or partners working together.

All residencies function exactly the same way. Each group of five arrives and leaves together, and the application process for all residencies is also exactly the same.

Additional Eligibility Information

The Grand Marais Art Colony recognizes the arts as an inherent and vital aspect of our shared common life. The creation and experience of artistic expression contribute to both individual and community well-being. We believe in the ability to build connections and understanding through supporting everyone’s artistic expression no matter their: race, tribal affiliation, ethnicity, national origin, immigration / refugee status, age, gender, sexuality, religion, ability, socioeconomic background and / or the intersectionality of these identities.

GMAC acknowledges that systems and structures currently in place have historically marginalized and underserved many of those whom we wish to have as part of our shared common life.

We are committed to closing access gaps in the arts with urgency and accountability. We believe sustained impact requires authentic relationships and transformative work, and to this end we are deeply invested. It will take time, it will take thought, it will require that we act with intention and integrity.

We are committed to making inclusion, diversity, equity and accessibility (IDEA) as much a part of our everyday operations as it is a part of the Art Colony’s mission. We believe that if we really want a flourishing organization, we can’t get there unless we are inclusive, diverse, equitable and accessible.

Sounds great, but what does it mean and how do we do it?

Answering that takes far more understanding, effort, and actualization than simply beginning to use words such as ‘inclusion’, ‘diversity’, ‘equity’ and ‘accessibility.’ The full implication of these words implies a way of thinking and acting that’s different from business as usual.

To understand the forces that cause disparities in our communities, organizations and country, there is history to unravel and a need for us to take a thoughtful look at how race, tribal affiliation, ethnicity, national origin, immigration / refugee status, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, class, disability status, geography, age and other forms of bias and oppression are embedded within the institutions and systems in our community, within the Art Colony, and within ourselves.

That means recognizing how privilege works as the flip side of bias and oppression, creating unspoken advantages for some communities over others. For us as an arts organization, it also means grappling with our identity in a sector where disparities can be profound. Ultimately, it means applying our learning as individuals and as an organization to make meaningful change in how we operate at the Grand Marais Art Colony.

We know this will be a continuing journey. Our thinking will continue to evolve. As we deepen our commitment to sustaining a flourishing, inclusive, diverse, equitable and accessible organization, we have refined our working definition of IDEA to mean the existence of conditions where all people can reach their full potential in the arts.

While building on the organizational efforts already made under the umbrella of IDEA, GMAC will focus its resources to educate ourselves, modify our practices and shift our own organizational culture to challenge and address disparities as we move towards building and sustaining a more inclusive, diverse, equitable and accessible arts sector.

A truly flourishing, inclusive, diverse, equitable and accessible Art Colony will take all of our collective knowledge and commitment. And, as we redouble our effort to make this intent a reality, we expect it will be uncomfortable at times. We do not have all the answers. We will make mistakes. Nonetheless, this is important work that we must do.

ON::VIEW Artist Residency

Savannah, GA, United States

ARTS Southeast is excited to invite you to apply to the ON::View Artist Residency! Located in the heart of Savannah’s Starland District, the ON::VIEW Artist Residency provides a free, high visibility studio space for an artist to complete a new project, to continue an in-progress endeavor, or to conduct research exploring conceptual, material, performative, and social practices. The studio’s large windows look out onto Bull Street, the district’s main thoroughfare, allowing the artists’ work to be on view to the community at all times. ARTS Southeast's visitors and passersby on the sidewalk witness the artists’ process as it unfolds in real time, seeing all the steps involved from concept to final execution. Community events like workshops, performances, public art projects and artist talks, offer creative ways to interact with the public. The ON::View Residency supports artists from across the globe, working in all media.

Just five blocks east of the Residency Studio, the 5th Dimension Apartment features a full kitchen, bath and main room to comfortably house the Artist (+1 guest if requested) for month-long Residency stays. The 5th Dimension Apartment has a private gated entrance and private garden with plenty of space to create, lounge and entertain.

Nitty Gritty Details:

Located just off the lobby in Sulfur Studios, the Residency Studio is 12 x 12 feet with large street level, east facing windows, which allow the community to view the Residents’ work 24/7. Artists may work in any medium suitable for the space.

Artists will have multiple opportunities to meet and connect with the local art community, and our ON::Call for ON::View list of Savannah experts provides unique one-on-one access to some of the city’s most knowledgeable and esteemed citizens specializing in Savannah history, art, activism, native flora and fauna, music, science and more, in support of Residents’ research and to provide additional avenues of community support during their residency period.

All ON::View Residents will do an Instagram Takeover for the duration of their Residency, sharing their process via @onviewresidency

All ON::View Residents will have the opportunity to participate in an annual group exhibition featuring all of the Residents of the last year. The exhibition will take place in January, 2024.

The ON::View Studio provides 24 hour access to Residents. Additionally, Residents must commit to working in the studio during our public open hours (TH - SUN, noon to 5PM) a minimum of one day per week.

  • Dates of Residency periods are firm. There are no exceptions for early move ins, late move outs, etc. as the spaces must be prepared for the next incoming Resident. Residents must be present during the First Friday Program Finale (see specific dates below).
  • Residents are encouraged to engage the community by giving a public lecture or workshop, or other interactive event during their stay.
  • Artists coming from out of town must cover their own travel costs. We offer lodging for accepted Residents at the 5th Dimension Apartment, located 5 blocks east of Sulfur Studios.

The Residency Studio has open air flow into the lobby and gallery area which makes the following restrictions necessary:

  • No aerosol or other toxic/high-voc materials are allowed in the space.
  • No ongoing or repetitive loud noises, such as grinding.  Occasional use of hand and power tools IS allowed.

- The Residency Studio is climate controlled, but due to its proximity to the doors and the large windows it can be warmer/cooler than the rest of the space depending on outside temperature.

- Limited furnishings in the Residency Studio are available. Accepted applicants must provide their own materials and supplies.

- Sulfur Studios does not insure the property of the Resident artist.

- Current Studio members or artists who have rented a studio at Sulfur Studios in the last 6 months are not eligible for this Residency.

- Collaborative teams are eligible for the Residency. One proposal should be submitted for the entire team. The 5th Dimension Apartment can house 2 artists comfortably, if teams of more than 2 artists would like to submit, making additional housing arrangements is encouraged.

- Artists may seek additional support or funding from other organizations to cover project costs if they wish. Sulfur Studios will be happy to provide a letter of support to accepted Residents seeking grants or other funding sources.
