FIELD NOTES | Learning + Network Building

Lisa Funderburke
September 20, 2024

Dear ACA Network,

I have had an extraordinary two weeks of professional development, learning, connecting, and laughing with ACA's international residency and network partners. It has been both an honor and a privilege to participate at the invitation of the Taiwan Art Space Alliance and Res Artis.

I had a few key takeaways:

  • Being in community with other residency network leaders, artists, and residency workers creates opportunities to explore the topics that matter to artist residencies and to the people who power them.
  • There is brilliant work happening around the globe. Learning about the activations, research, and inquiries happening in Taiwan and throughout Asia was energizing. The challenges we face as a field are similar across contexts and there is an opportunity for us to do more together.
  • Artists and arts workers still, above all, value a "welcome, inclusive, and safer" residency experience to explore their work. When I presented the importance of strengthening equitable capacity (the facility or power to embody equity across all areas of an organization, specifically its policies, processes, and practices), we were unified in our thinking that this is essential to our work as a field. It is abundantly clear that this work is not tethered to a moment or to a trend, but our enduring collective work as champions of fair and just conditions for all artists and arts workers.

In the coming weeks, I will send out invites to check in with residency directors and our other affinity groups to listen and share ACA updates. Additionally, we will share announcements to celebrate our growing network as ACA approaches its 35th year and the work we are doing to steward this robust  and growing field of practice.

Meanwhile, I encourage you to sign up for our upcoming Field Conversation with Alana Hernandez. This is a unique opportunity to delve into how Alana, a dynamic leader, manages a residency program in a university context. We are thrilled to have Sanjit Sethi, ACA Board Chair and President of Minneapolis College of Art and Design, and Melissa Levin, an esteemed independent curator and Program Officer at the Jerome Foundation, as our First Responders for this event.

Lastly, please consider joining us for our upcoming Evolving Program Institute (formerly the Emerging Program Institute), where residency practitioners can skill up in fundraising, planning, storytelling, and all you need to operationalize your program in an intimate cohort experience. We are trying something different this year, a choose your adventure model to increase access. You can join us in Los Angeles at 18th Street Arts Center, the longest running residency program in Southern California, or in Newark, NJ at the incredible Art House Productions. ACA staff will be present at each location to facilitate the live experience, or participate online and interact with faculty and other attendees virtually if that works better for you. One program, three points of access.

I am looking forward to connecting, sharing, and learning with you.

More soon,

Lisa Funderburke
ACA President + CEO

Mission

The Wassaic Project, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, uses art and arts education to foster positive social change. We nurture connections between our artists and our neighbors facilitating a mutual broadening of perspectives and respect across economic and cultural boundaries.

Vision

The Wassaic Project envisions a community in the Hamlet of Wassaic and its surrounding region that is socially inclusive, generous, cooperative, and economically vibrant.

We engage in a collaborative effort with members of our community to develop programs that are creative, experimental, and accessible across the economic spectrum.

We strive to be actively anti-racist and to have diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility as an integral part of our programs and initiatives. We will continually evaluate, solicit feedback, and evolve our efforts to ensure their effectiveness.

We build local pride and community vitality by an informed sense of the past and a clear, contemporary, innovative, and compassionate look toward the future.

We foster the youth in our community and help them realize their full potential.

We aim to be financially stable with a creative staff and multiple partners — nonprofit, public, and private.

It is our hope that the work that we do in Wassaic will be shared nationwide and serve as a toolkit for community revitalization through the arts and the spirit of generosity. Above all else, we honor and respect our community.

Application Requirements

  • Contact information
  • 1–10 work samples
  • CV (3 pages max)
  • 2 references
  • $25 application fee
  • Proposal: We believe our residency works best as a creative laboratory untied to outcome. We would like to hear about what makes you curious, what you are interested in investigating, and what your jumping off point would be. (200 words max)
  • Optional question: We want to look at your work according to your definition of success. Are there additional criteria that you would like the panel/us to consider when reviewing your work? For example: What do you consider to be a successful piece or process? If you work with a community, the artistic product may not be the sole or most important creation of the work. Are there other impacts and creations in your process we should focus on? Please share any documentation that could bring us close to these impacts—interviews, testimony from participants, writing about the work, images from an event, etc.

Review

Artists-in-residence are selected by a review panel composed of the Wassaic Project Co-Directors, Director of Artistic Programming, and professionals in the field. Residents will be selected based on the quality of their work, commitment to their practice, and ability to interact positively with the community at large.

Residency Fees

We offer our residency on a sliding scale, from $0–900. It costs us $5,000 per person to host the residency. Most of this is covered by the generous support of donors and grants, but we recommend a contribution of $900 per 4-week residency per person from artists who are able to contribute. We also offer 10+ fellowships per year, which include a no-fee residency plus an honorarium.

Financial Assistance

We offer need-based financial assistance to artists-in-residence for whom it would be impossible to attend without financial support. Financial need is self-reported by artists in their applications. We ask that artists who are in a position to fully contribute towards the residency fee please do so.

Edward F. Albee Foundation Summer/Fall Residency

The Edward F. Albee Foundation exists to serve writers and visual artists from all walks of life, by providing time and space in which to work without disturbance.

Using only talent and need as the criteria for selection, the Foundation invites any and all artists to apply.

Founded in 1967 by Edward Albee, after proceeds from his play Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? proved abundant, the Foundation has maintained the William Flanagan Memorial Creative Persons Center (better known as "The Barn") in Montauk, on Long Island in New York, as a residence for writers and visual artists.

The Center is open almost year-round and can accommodate four creative persons at a time. Residencies are for calendar-month periods (with rare, pre-approved exceptions). The standards for admission are, simply, talent and need.

Located approximately two miles from the center of  Montauk and the Atlantic Ocean, "The Barn" rests in a secluded knoll  which offers privacy and a peaceful atmosphere. The Foundation expects all those accepted for residence to work seriously and to conduct themselves in such a manner as to aid fellow residents in their endeavors.  Writers and visual artists are offered individual en-suite bedrooms and separate working studios. Residents are responsible for their food, travel, and other expenses. The environment is simple and communal.

William Flanagan Memorial Creative Persons Center

MONTAUK, NY, United States

2025 Summer (Third Quarter) Residencies

Associated Residency Program

We offer solo residencies of 1-3 weeks (two-week max summer quarter, so that we can accommodate more women who teach or have family commitments) in a well-appointed cottage in deep woods above Hammersley Inlet on Puget Sound. The cottage is five miles from Shelton, a small logging town. Residents are responsible for their own transportation to Holly House, preparing their own food, and maintaining themselves while in residence. The small kitchen has a two-burner countertop stove, under-counter refrigerator, broiler oven, microwave, and coffeemaker. A loft bedroom has writing/drawing space, and there is a pull-out sofa bed downstairs for those who do not want to have to use stairs.

The cottage has a ramped entry and spacious bathroom, but is not fully ADA compliant, and the grounds are not particularly wheelchair-friendly. Residents with some disabilities are welcome to bring a helper by arrangement with the board. We are a small nonprofit, and a working board; there is no staff. However, volunteers provide clean linens; we ask residents to spend a few hours at the end of their stay cleaning the house for the next resident.

The place is good accommodation for writers, visual artists, academics, playwrights and artists in other fields. There is decent wifi through a sharing arrangement with the next-door neighbors. There are paths in the woods and great hiking and saltwater access nearby. Residents are required to have a vehicle on the premises for their own safety in case of evacuation orders.

We do not turn away any applicant on the basis of ability to pay. We are happy to accept donations (and call it a fee if it helps with tax status). It costs about $40 per day to keep the doors open, but many residents pay only a portion of that, if at all, and some donate more.

March & April in Tennessee

Associated Residency Program

If nature is your muse, collaborator, or co-conspirator, then make plans for a residency in March and/or April in Tennessee.

Feel fresh with comfortable temperatures, pops of color and variety of greens. You'll hear the birds and possibly feel the spring rain. Take the shoes off and stand on the grass for a grounding experience.

“Flowers don't worry about how they're going to bloom. They just open up and turn toward the light, and that makes them beautiful." – Jim Carrey

A variety of flowers begin to bloom starting with the daffodils in February, but you'll also see wild flora such as clovers and dandelions. The trees begin their sprouting and the daylight is a minute longer day by day.

Those who stay at least 2 weeks will receive a guided Forest Therapy (aka Forest Bathing) walk (certified guide by ANFT) for a deeper connection to the land. Make the creative habit to wander the landscape on a daily basis.

“Spring work is going on with joyful enthusiasm." – John Muir

This is an ideal time to work outside, but there are several studios and work spaces that are assigned based on the calendar and your space/medium requirements.

The bulk of the residency schedule availability is during March and April. There may be overlaps in residency participation or you might be the only one to enjoy the solace.

  • Daylight Savings starts March 9.
  • Spring Equinox is March 20.

“It's spring again. I can hear the birds sing again. See the flowers start to bud. See young people fall in love." – Lou Rawls, "Spring Again"

For more information about the residency including pictures and a blog of previous participants, please visit the website.

Let your creativity FLOW LIKE THE BUFFALO river on the edge of our acreage.

Individuals must be able to let the normal world and lifestyle go during your stay and it is encouraged that you utilize the time and access to the benefits of being away from contemporary society. If you cannot go a day without your favorite coffee shop visit, have fast food on the brain, or need lots of people around to function, this is not the place for you.

Be prepared for a different sense of time here and your project goals may actually go faster because you don't have your normal life distractions. You must agree to all of the policies which includes basic life chores like washing dishes daily as a creative philosophy allow your mind to wander and your inner gut to rejuvenate.

Projects at any stage are acceptable from seed starting to harvesting.

Applications accepted on a rolling basis. For priority on options for room and studio choice, please submit by the December deadline. Additional deadline may open in 2025 based on availability.
