The 2024 MacColl Johnson Fellowships

ACA Staff
July 11, 2024

Applications will be accepted from July 15 through September 4, 2024.

The Rhode Island Foundation is pleased to announce that The Robert and Margaret MacColl Johnson Fellowships application process is now open. The 2024 fellowships will be awarded to writers. The Rhode Island Foundation is once again employing Artist Communities Alliance (ACA),the international service organization for artist residency programs and artist-centered organizations, to manage applications and the jury process for The Robert and Margaret MacColl Johnson Fellowships.

In an effort to reach Rhode Island writers across the entire state, we are asking that you please share this information with your networks.

The Robert and Margaret MacColl Johnson Fellowship Fund, established by the Rhode Island Foundation in 2003, provides up to three $30,000 artist fellowships each year, rotating among composers, writers, and visual artists on a three-year cycle. In all three disciplines, the Fellowships will be awarded to emerging and mid-career Rhode Island artists whose work demonstrates exceptional creativity, rigorous dedication and consistent artistic practice, and significant artistic merit.

For the complete guidelines, eligibility requirements and answers to frequently asked questions, visit the application page.

Westerly Library & Wilcox Park AIR at The Cottage

Westerly Library & Wilcox Park AIR at The Cottage

Westerly, RI, United States

Westerly, RI is a growing arts community. There are already a number of anchors in Westerly to support the arts including the United, Knickerbocker, the Artists’ Cooperative Gallery of Westerly, the Chorus of Westerly, the Hoxie Gallery at Westerly Library, Colonial Theatre, Granite Theatre, and increasing awareness and appreciation of the arts.

In the heart of downtown Westerly and part of the arts community, Westerly Library and Wilcox Park believes the Artist-in-Residence (AIR) program further nurtures our arts community through cooperative support and education; it will provide artists an opportunity to work on and share their art, and encourage creativity and artistry in all community members and visitors.

Westerly Library & Wilcox Park's AIR program is designed to encourage the creative, intellectual and personal growth of emerging and established artists. It is expected that artists have sufficient skills and experience to work independently in their studio area. The residency is designed to allow artists to take risks and pursue new projects and ideas, free from everyday pressures.

The Artist-in-Residence (AIR) also expands Westerly Library and Wilcox Park’s impact on local art and culture, offers public engagement, promotes community connections, and provides creative and educational opportunities for the community while supporting cultural and artistic exchange.

Buinho Residency Program - New call for 2026 - Portugal

Associated Residency Program

The Buinho Residency program is designed for individuals from diverse creative and research backgrounds.

Located in the scenic Alentejo region of Southern Portugal, Buinho's creative hub was established with the invaluable support of a curatorial team boasting over a decade of experience organizing and facilitating various residency initiatives across Portugal.

Since its inception in 2016, Buinho has experienced remarkable growth in the number of applications it receives, solidifying its reputation as a highly sought-after artistic residency program. Today, Buinho stands as a prominent European beacon in the realm of artistic residencies due to its unique affiliation with the Fablab, which amplifies creative experimentation opportunities.

Our journey commenced with a single house accommodating two residents and the Fablab. However, we have since expanded significantly, now boasting six distinct houses and spaces, offering both shared and private studios, a state-of-the-art digital fabrication workshop, as well as dedicated exhibition spaces. In collaboration with the local municipality, we are proud to offer access to a metalworking workshop exclusively dedicated to sculpture and plastic recycling. Besides both the Fablab and the Precious Plastic recycling space, we also highlight the newly added textile lab, equipped with sewing machines, digital embroidery, tufting equipment, and other textile dedicated equipment that serves not only a local sewing club, but also for textile experimentation.

Throughout our history, we have been privileged to host a diverse array of artists, including visual artists, performance artists, photographers, curators, writers, sculptors, designers, and media artists, underscoring the eclectic and inclusive nature of our program.

Buinho stands as an early pioneer among rural FabLabs in Portugal, offering artists a boundless realm for their creative exploration. Nestled in one of the sunniest corners of Europe, we empower our residents to delve into an array of cutting-edge technologies, including 3D Printing, Lasercut, CNC, and more. For additional details, please visit us at https://buinho.pt/residency-2/

Additional Eligibility Information

Artists interested in participating should send by email (info@buinho.pt) a short curriculum, motivation letter, and description of the project. Equally important is to mention the proposed dates for the residency (start and length).

Applications are evaluated by an advisory committee and take into consideration the following parameters:
a) artistic quality;
b) relevance of the project;
c) motivation of the candidate.

Our AIR program values multidisciplinary, so we expect the acceptance of creatives from different backgrounds, media, and experiences.  We also try to support emerging artists who seek opportunities for international visibility and curriculum. The level of scrutiny of the portfolio's quality is proportionate to the artist's experience.

Fees 2026

We do not have public or private funding for the residencies, and aside from the normal house bills and work consumables, we have a full-time person just for production support of the residencies. As such, we have to apply fees, but we do keep the fees to a minimum since we are a not-for-profit association based in a rural area.

We try to differentiate the value of the residency fees according to the characteristics of the accommodation since each house offers bedrooms and spaces with different dimensions and privacy.

Monthly fees are the following:

1. São João larger bedroom with private bathroom - 900€;

2. São João other two bedrooms - 800€;

3. Padaria's house - 900€;

4. Casa da Avo - 900€.

An accompanying person has a 50% discount but must share the accommodation. It is an additional measure to support couples, artists with children, or possible artistic collaborations.

The minimum duration of each residency is two weeks and the maximum is two months. Residencies should start on the 1st or 15th of each month.

Please note that after the acceptance in Buinho AIR program, we will ask for an initial deposit of 50% of the total value of the stay. The remaining 50% is to be paid during the first week of residency. For payment of the deposit, the resident can choose bank transfer. Buinho will issue a receipt or send a formal acceptance letter if needed.

Cancellation requests with a full reimbursement of the deposit should be made by writing within 5 months before the start of the period of stay. All other cancellations will not result in a refund. Deposits are non-refundable and residency dates are non-transferable.

BCA Playwright Residency

Boston, MA, United States

The BCA Playwright Residency supports rising playwrights by providing space to write, rehearse, and workshop a new work. Support is tailored to the selected artist, including mentorship, professional development to create, produce and reach expanded audiences, as well as further their creative process. This program aims to provide a container for playwrights who are invested in developing experimental work that sheds light on underrepresented stories and narratives. The playwright must create a new work while in the program.

As part of the program, the awarded playwrights will have access to free space for a mid-year workshop, as well as a final staged reading. The playwrights will have access to a studio space located in the BCA Artist Studios Building, located at 551 Tremont St. The studio space will be shared between both playwrights, and it is already equipped with desks, chairs and power. The playwrights will also be able to work with up to 5 collaborators for the mid-year workshop and final stage reading.

ARTISTIC ETHOS:

Our goal is to gather a diverse and inclusive community of artists for the purpose of supporting innovative work across disciplines, connecting artists with peers and resources, and providing a vibrant platform for new art in Boston.

Applications will be evaluated based on artist’s demonstration of:

  • Experimentation. Does the artist’s practice display innovation, openness to new ideas, perspectives, and techniques?
  • Responsiveness. Is the artist’s work releva

EXPECTATIONS: We do not place productivity or public presentation requirements on residents. Artists are free to experiment, research, create new work and rest as they wish. Any work artists make at Vashon Artist Residency will be theirs.

APPLICATION CRITERIA & REVIEW: Invitation to Vashon Artist Residency is based on demonstrated commitment to your artistic practice, the strength of past artwork, the feasibility of residency goals and the ability to co-create a positive communal life and work environment in a rural setting.

Applications are reviewed by a new panel of artists each year. Some panelists are alumni of Vashon Artist Residency and bring knowledge of the facility and location to the review process. Other panelists bring the experience of a discipline, culture or creative practice to the evaluation and conversation.

We request that applicants provide contact information for one reference who can speak to their ability to live and work positively with others.

COLLABORATIONS: If applying as a collaborative team, each artist must submit an individual application. Include a proposal detailing the work your team plans to develop during the residency. Indicate your collaborators in the Applicant Information Section and provide details on your project and living accommodation needs. Work samples should reflect individual work and may include previous collaborative projects.

NOTIFICATION: Applicants will be notified of their application status by late October 2025.

James Castle House Artist Residency

Boise, ID, United States

Boise City Department of Arts & History invites emerging and mid-career artists in any creative field to apply for a residency at the James Castle House in Boise, Idaho. The historic home site, where American artist James Castle lived and worked for over four decades, stands today as a testament to the artist's unique talent, lifelong practice, and artistic legacy.

This residency invites artists to immerse themselves in the site, explore the house, its history, and the surrounding landscape, and respond to their experience through the creation of new works. Residents will share their creative practice and process with our community through several public in-person and hybrid events throughout their stay, including, but not limited to, workshops, open studios, and presentations. Through this program, the James Castle House keeps the legacy of daily creativity and experimentation alive on-site, cultivating a growing local and national community and providing a deeper understanding of James Castle and the place he called home.

Located in the vibrant and dynamic Collister neighborhood, it has easy access to Boise’s downtown and the nearby foothills, allowing residents to experience the beauty and culture of Idaho’s capital city while ensuring a quiet and private workspace. Each residency cycle provides one participant with private furnished living quarters, 24-hour studio access, and a stipend to assist with living expenses and supplies necessary to create work.

 The James Castle House Residency program is open to emerging and mid-career artists and professionals working in any creative field. This includes but is not limited to, visual or new media artists, poets, writers, musicians, dancers, metalsmiths, and printmakers. However, due to the property’s limitations and proximity to neighbors, the site cannot accommodate loud or especially messy processes. If special equipment or facilities are required for the creation of work, the James Castle House will work to find a partnership within the Boise community to fill those needs.

Selection Criteria: Selections will be made by committee and based on the following:

  • Strength of application
  • Quality of work samples
  • References
  • Interview

Demographic information will not be available to committee panelists unless the applicant discloses identifying information in short answer application questions.

Eligibility:

  • Open to applicants legally able to work in the United States.
  • Applicants must be able to pass a thorough background check.
  • Applicants must be 18 or older.

Meeting the Needs of a Changing Residency Landscape

ACA Staff
June 19, 2024

In 2011, Artist Communities Alliance launched the “Emerging Program Institute,” a unique  learning experience that preceded ACA’s celebrated annual conference. Since then, this networking and learning opportunity has welcomed leaders at all residency development phases — from ideation to launch. In response to pandemic and recovery protocols, ACA pivoted to provide this robust and much-needed program in a virtual-only format.

After listening, learning, and evaluating, we're following our own advice and shepherding in a new Evolving Program Institute! For the first time, EPI will welcome both Emerging and Established programs, with curated content for each stage's specialized needs. This new format gives everyone the opportunity to benefit from thoughtful assessment and refinement, regardless of the stage of your residency.

In response to the needs of our network, we will offer EPI in a new, hybrid format which will provide interactive virtual events and in-person opportunities in multiple locations.

This three-day, newly-hybrid intensive includes expert-led workshops, artist presentations, panel discussions, interactive activities and networking opportunities. Learn strategies, gain tools, and develop networks to strengthen all elements of your residency program utilizing Artist Communities Alliance’s Five Pillars of Healthy Residency Framework: Identity, Program Design, Operations, Resource Development, and Stewardship.

Join us Nov. 12-14, 2024 for the 2024 Evolving Program Institute!

The complete EPI 2024 schedule will be announced this summer. If you are interested in joining the first Evolving Programs Institute in Fall 2024, check out the program page.

Summer 2025 Parent + Educator Artist-in-Residence

Associated Residency Program

The McColl Center's internationally acclaimed Artist-in-Residence program serves as a catalyst for growth for emerging and mid-career artists. McColl Center hosts three residency terms per year—fall, winter/spring, and summer, for four artists per term. An artist residency at McColl Center is a moment to think big, take risks in the creative process, and explore ideas within the context of Charlotte.

Summer 2025 Artist-in-Residence Program is offered to parents and educators who otherwise would not have the opportunity to participate in McColl Center residency because of their responsibilities during school/university periods. This residency will support their practices, give you the chance to bring your family with you, use the facilities, and equipment offered by the Center on our Labs.

Artists-in-Residence receive private housing adjacent to McColl Center, a large-scale private studio in our historic building in Uptown Charlotte, curatorial guidance, marketing and PR support, and a generous stipend. While in residency, our artists have the freedom to fully focus on artistic research, exploration, and creation while also engaging with McColl Center’s Igniters community and the local creative sector.

The Summer 2025 Parent + Educator Artist-in-Residence program runs from June 3 - August 11, 2025.

The deadline for applications is September 23, 2024.
