Meeting the Needs of a Changing Residency Landscape

ACA Staff
June 19, 2024

In 2011, Artist Communities Alliance launched the “Emerging Program Institute,” a unique  learning experience that preceded ACA’s celebrated annual conference. Since then, this networking and learning opportunity has welcomed leaders at all residency development phases — from ideation to launch. In response to pandemic and recovery protocols, ACA pivoted to provide this robust and much-needed program in a virtual-only format.

After listening, learning, and evaluating, we're following our own advice and shepherding in a new Evolving Program Institute! For the first time, EPI will welcome both Emerging and Established programs, with curated content for each stage's specialized needs. This new format gives everyone the opportunity to benefit from thoughtful assessment and refinement, regardless of the stage of your residency.

In response to the needs of our network, we will offer EPI in a new, hybrid format which will provide interactive virtual events and in-person opportunities in multiple locations.

This three-day, newly-hybrid intensive includes expert-led workshops, artist presentations, panel discussions, interactive activities and networking opportunities. Learn strategies, gain tools, and develop networks to strengthen all elements of your residency program utilizing Artist Communities Alliance’s Five Pillars of Healthy Residency Framework: Identity, Program Design, Operations, Resource Development, and Stewardship.

Join us Nov. 12-14, 2024 for the 2024 Evolving Program Institute!

The complete EPI 2024 schedule will be announced this summer. If you are interested in joining the first Evolving Programs Institute in Fall 2024, check out the program page.

2026 Residency Open Call

Associated Residency Program

In 2012 the Sam & Adele Golden Foundation for the Arts opened its doors to a one-of a-kind artist residency for artists working in paint. In the beautiful rolling hills of central New York and just several hundred yards from the Golden Artist Colors manufacturing facility, a 19th century barn has been transformed into a 21st century artist residency, with large studio spaces and private residency apartments. Artists-in-residence will participate in a completely unique opportunity to explore the widest, most innovative range of materials and technology available today for professional artists working with paint.

With a greater array of materials available to artists than ever before, this is an exciting time in art history. The Golden Foundation Residency Program is specifically designed to assist the professional artist in discovering and exploring the many materials and technologies available today. Through the Golden Foundation, residents will have the unparalleled opportunity to work with dozens of unique materials and technologies.

Our residencies are based on the exploration of innovative uses in waterborne materials, oil paint technology and PanPastels. Residents will discover materials that will challenge the way they think about paint. They will be introduced to materials that will open up new methods and new channels for expression and the creative process.

The Golden Foundation will be offering 6 Residency sessions, each session lasting 4 weeks with up to 3 artists.

The Golden Foundation’s goal, since inception, has been to reduce and eventually eliminate the fees for artists to attend the residency. 2017 marked the Golden Foundation’s 20th anniversary, and we celebrated with an art auction! This auction raised enough dollars to allow all artists in the future to come to the residency at no cost. We hope to continue this tradition for years to come. All artists accepted into the residency program receive a generous supply of paint materials and technical support. Artists are responsible for their food expense and preparation as well as travel expenses to and from the residency. Artists should plan to bring their own tools, canvas, and paper. Some canvas and paper will be available through the Golden Foundation. Upon acceptance to the Golden Foundation Residency, a $250 deposit will be required of all residents.

Artist Residency at Edgewood Farm in Truro

Associated Residency Program

The artist residency program of The Truro Center for the Arts at Edgewood Farm is a program that began in 2017, developed to encourage the creative, intellectual and personal growth of emerging and established artists. We collaborates with our distinguished educational facility at the Castle Hill Campus, whose mission is to foster the arts for the local and regional community.  The Truro Center for the Arts at Edgewood Farm will focus on the development of “the artistic process”  by providing artists a beautiful place to work for an extended period of time.  The residency program at Edgewood Farm will strive to bring a broader artistic cultural conversation to the local community and economy of the Outer Cape.

The Truro Center for the Arts at Edgewood Farm sits on  nearly 7.5 bucolic acres adjacent to the Cape Cod National Seashore, the Atlantic Ocean and town conservation land.  The residency provides artists an opportunity to be in a quiet and contemplative place, within walking distance to the dunes, natural forests, bike trails, ponds and spectacular beaches that are rated among the top ten most beautiful in the world.  At a time when the natural environment is at risk, Edgewood Farm will offer artists a place to regain a connection to the natural world and draw inspiration from the environment.

Approximately 3-8 artists a month will have uninterrupted time to work in 5 studios.
