Penington Friends House

Location

215 E 15th Street
New York , NY 10003
United States

The Penington Friends House has been creating caring community in New York City since 1897. A multigenerational, collaborative, residence run by the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) for Quakers and friendly people, it offers short term guest room accommodations, sublet, and long term residencies. In 2020, it started the year long Bayard Rustin Residency to fund one BIPOC artist or activist working to end systemic Racism in the United States.

MISSION

Since the beginning, PFH has upheld its relatively simple purpose. In the words of an early charter, it aims to: “1) make a home-like place for Friends and those in sympathy with Friends; 2) to make a home-like headquarters for Friendly people, where strangers and visitors may find a temporary boarding place at reasonable cost; and 3) to furnish a place where Friends generally and Friendly people may meet as committees or individuals to confer or procure a meal.”

HISTORY

The Penington Friends House occupies one of five brownstones built in 1870 by the Stuyvesant family. Originally one of five single family residence built in a row along 15th Street, it was purchased by the Quakers in May of 1897. Until the 1980’s it maintained a white table cloth, formal dinner residency. In the 1980s, it became a collaborative living house in which residents share in chores and decision making. It is still a collaborative house with residents ranging from ages 20 to 80, and who are students, artists, non-profit workers, and more.

The house’s exterior and grand parlor have been well preserved. Resent renovations have restored much of its early splendor.

It is important to note that the Penington was started by Quaker women, several of which were abolitionists. Also, the Penington stands on land that was once Peter Stuyvesant’s farm and before that the ancestral home of the Lenape (Delware) people. Once called the Great Bouwerie, Styvesant’s farm extended from present day 5th Street to 17th Street, and from the East River to Fourth Avenue. The location of PFH is ironic because as Governor of New Netherlands from 1646-1664 Peter Stuyvesant tried energetically to keep Quakers out of the entire colony. Today, PFH neighbors the Friends Meetinghouse, Friends Seminary, and all the New York Yearly Meeting Offices. Other Quaker institutions were started in the immediate area including the Hopper House that supports women leaving prison and the Orphanage for Colored Children. At one time, the Penington was the only institution in the community that served meals to people of color.

Self as Universe: Mending Our Collective Ecosystem

Hands holding an oyster inscribed with "we can hold each other"

Self as Universe: Mending Our Collective Ecosystem

New Orleans, LA, United States

The climate crisis is an urgent global concern. Self as Universe: Mending Our Collective Ecosystem Residencies at A Studio in the Woods invite artists to explore the connections within our collective ecosystems and use the power of imagination to heal the wounds in the relationship between ourselves and our communities. Southeast Louisiana’s land and inhabitants are continually scarred by the effects of environmental degradation. These injuries – the historical to the present – affect our bodies, families, communities, and cultures, as well as the land and its other creatures.  We encourage artists to guide our collective response as the caretakers and caregivers to our universe while bringing wisdom, integrity, optimism, and even humor to intentional and timely projects seeking transformation for our species and planet.

Marble House Project AIR 2026

Associated Residency Program

Marble House Project is a multi-disciplinary artist residency program that fosters collaboration & the exchange of ideas by providing an environment for artists across disciplines to live and work side by side. Each session hosts eight artists and is carefully curated to bring together a group of creative workers across various disciplines, who might collaborate and learn from one another. Applications  include but is not limited to visual arts, writing, choreography, music composition and performance. There are four sessions that last for three weeks  and one session devoted to ecology than runs for two weeks.   Our season runs from April through October.  Artists are selected based on the quality and commitment to their work and their project description. It is important to note that each session is specifically curated in order to maximize the art residency experience for each individual artist. All residents live together in the historic, eight-bedroom Manley-Lefevre house, which is organized around a responsibilities-sharing system, highlighting sustainability and fostering community. We provide fresh ingredients and all residents will be asked to cook dinner (in a pair) three to four times over the course of their residency. Although not required, our hope is that you will spend some time in the garden alongside your studio practice. At the end of each session, artists are invited to present their work at ARTSeed. This takes the form of talks, performances and open studios.

Monira Performance Residency

Jersey City, NJ, United States

The Monira Foundation’s Performance Residency for 2024 will provide space and time to Performing and Movement-based Artists in the New Jersey/New York area at the Monira Foundation Gallery. Beginning from April 15 to September 15, up to six selected artists or collaborative groups will be granted month-long access to a performance space with a portable sprung wood floor. This opportunity allows artists to utilize the space to support their practices.

The Performance Residency for this year offers a $250 stipend for individuals and $400 for groups (lead applicant). Artists will also have access to a safe and private studio space with windows. The Monira Gallery, measuring 45 ft x 60 ft, features concrete floors and a portable wood floor measuring 12 ft x 30 ft. Marley is available for artists interested in covering the floor. There is a sound system in the space, and selected artists can bring their music devices (with adaptors) to connect to the audio equipment. Artists may also feel free to bring there own.

In addition to providing physical space, residents may receive visits from artists and gain visibility through Monira’s social media and communication channels during their residency.

Successful applications are open to individual artists or collaborations working in the performance realm, encompassing disciplines such as dance, film, music, theater, and visual art related to movement. This residency emphasizes the artistic process without the expectation of presenting a final piece of work, although artists may choose to do so if it aligns with their process. Housing and transportation are not included in this opportunity.

This opportunity is best suited for New Jersey/New York-based artists who:

  • Explore their interests and questions with thoughtful processes and articulate a context for their work.
  • Are excited about sharing their work through the Monira Foundation and embrace dialogue with audiences as a meaningful part of their process.
  • Are at least 18 years of age and not currently enrolled in an undergraduate degree program.

This residency seeks to serve a diverse and inclusive community, supporting performers of all racial and cultural perspectives and abilities. The selection process involves a panel review with an invited curator, Karole Armitage, Monira staff, and former Resident Artists.

Surel's Place: Artist-in-Residency Program (July - December)

Associated Residency Program

Surel’s Place offers month-long residencies in our one-bedroom home with a spacious studio for artists aged 25 and older to focus on their work and their creative processes.

We are located in the heart of the Surel Mitchell Live-Work-Create District, a vibrant blend of artist studios, single-family homes, new urban condos, wineries and breweries, creative businesses and riverside activity (including a surprising surfing community built around a wave and whitewater park). Though the home and immediate surroundings are quiet and peaceful, the residency is just a short walk along the river to Boise’s downtown core.

The program is open to visual, literary, multimedia and performance artists of promise and renown: we have hosted painters, sculptors, writers, musicians, composers, filmmakers, choreographers, immersive VR artists and many others. What our artists have in common is a need for a quiet place to create.

Applicants can be at any point in their careers or creative journeys. We recognize the value of process and look to support artists who approach this time with purpose and intention.

We believe artists of all backgrounds and disciplines should be supported and amplified for the  the value they add to our individual and collective lives. We aim to give artists the time, shelter, and professional support their work deserves. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, we can offer a stipend of $100 per week for living expenses.

Our deadlines are March 1 for residencies in the following July-December and Sept. 1 for residencies in the following January-June.

Additional Eligibility Information

All who complete their applications are reviewed by experienced and accomplished artists in their own discipline. Each independently shares their thoughts and impressions of the candidates, their work, their intention and process, their specific proposals for Surel’s Place, and their access to artistic support and to the amplification of their voices. Surel’s Place staff make final determinations based on these recommendations, availability and timing (there are always more qualified and worthy applicants than we can accommodate).

We seek to view all decisions through a lens of antiracism. Surel’s Place is committed to eliminating the racist system and structure that has shaped the arts community in Idaho and around the country. We can no longer pretend that saying “Everyone is Welcome” is the same as welcoming every body. We believe that art is a medium of connection, that art can increase understanding of all of the ways it is to be human. We fail if our work only elevates white artists or certain artistic traditions.

Donkeys & Spring Flowers - May 11 - 25, 2025

Associated Residency Program

May is literally THE BEST TIME to be in a Sarasvati creative Space residency at Camp Wonder Wander!

May 11 - 25, 2025 - join this cohort max of 9, feel the power of the full moon, and celebrate four donkey birthdays.

" Let us live like flowers, wild and beautiful and drenched in sun."
- Ellen Everett

The weather here in May is particularly lovely - the flowers and trees, grass, etc. are in full bloom and colorful glory. It's a spectacular time to use the outdoor space to your advantage. Check out the website for many more photos. The founder/director spent a good amount of time in the last several years on this organic art experience by expanding the flower gardens so it's always fun to see what pops up. You can be guaranteed to see a lot of variations of green and many vibrant pops.

Your time is your own during this stay, but plan for social opportunities and cross-over conversations at various times beyond the organized group meals and a guided Forest Therapy walk.

Program Fee is $700 which includes all access to the land, the private area of the Buffalo River, interactions with the special and incredible donkey crew (15 total, mostly miniatures), utilities, wifi broadband, the creative environment, housekeeping before/after and once a week during the program. Additionally 3 group meals (intro, mid-stream, finale), a camp care package, and a guided Forest Therapy walk with your host, a certified guide by ANFT. Expect at least one campfire if the weather permits and starry skies (also weather permitting as the moon wanes over the two weeks).

Lodging Fee ranges from $350 - 850 depending on your selected room - single options with shared bath or private ensuites that can be doubles. Five rooms with different size bed options will share a bathroom with possibly one other person. There are three ensuite options that can be single or double (price listed can be shared by two or is the single private upgrade).

Additional Eligibility Information

Let your creativity FLOW LIKE THE BUFFALO river on the edge of our acreage. Applicants with nature as their muse, inspiration, or collaborator will receive priority.

This residency is scheduled during the Flower Moon. Please explain how nature, color, moon, or other aspects of the place fit within your residency goals.

Individuals must be able to let the normal world and lifestyle go during your stay and it is encouraged that you utilize the time and access to the benefits of being away from contemporary society. If you cannot go a day without your favorite coffee shop visit, have fast food on the brain, or need lots of people around to function, this is not the place for you.

Be prepared for a different sense of time here and your project goals may actually go faster because you don't have your normal life distractions. You must agree to all of the policies which include contributing to the facility and land in some capacity as well as general, regular cleaning like washing dishes daily and other daily chores that as a creative philosophy allow your mind to wander and your inner gut to rejuvenate.

This is a group residency experience where everyone will have their own private bedroom (or select the double option as a private room or a creative friend/partner). Each participant should be okay with a group experience in shared spaces. There will be daily basic housekeeping in the shared bathrooms and communal spaces. You'll need to wash your own dishes or ask for that add-on option.
