The Luminary's Residency Program

St. Louis, MO, United States

The Luminary 2024 Residency Open Call supports creative practitioners who engage with pressing issues of our time. As a residency focusing on process and research, The Luminary will provide individuals, small collectives, and collaborations with the space and time to rest, reflect and relate around a line of inquiry. The intention is that residents can focus on their research process, free of expectation of a final product. The Luminary welcomes national and international applicants of all backgrounds, such as artists, curators, writers, designers, educators, and arts administrators. Non-traditional backgrounds are welcome.

Resources

In addition to time and space, each resident receives a weekly stipend for their project and funded travel to The Luminary in St. Louis. The Luminary has a three-bedroom, one-bathroom apartment with a full kitchen, dining area, living room, and free laundry. The apartment is located above the gallery on Cherokee Street, a small business corridor with restaurants, coffee shops, grocery stores, and bars. Please note that St. Louis is not very accessible by public transportation, so make a plan for your day-to-day travel around the city.

This residency is largely self-directed and process-based. There is no expectation of a final product or outcome. However, if desired, there is an opportunity to work with The Luminary's team to engage with the St. Louis community through coffee dates, studio visits, small-scale programming, etc.

Grand Canyon Astronomer-in-Residence

Grand Canyon Astronomer-in-Residence

Grand Canyon , AZ, United States

Grand Canyon Conservancy's (GCC) Astronomer-in-Residence program supports astronomers and dark-sky advocates from various disciplines that wish to engage with the night skies of Grand Canyon and build connections with the community by sharing their expertise, instruments, and passion with the park's public.

Astronomers, both professional and amateur, scientists from ecologists to geologists, dark-sky advocates, educators, writers, and other practitioners with expertise in the night sky are encouraged to apply. We prioritize local Indigenous storytellers who focus on the night sky, and other night sky practitioners from marginalized communities across the United States and beyond.

Selected astronomers live and work at the Grand Canyon South Rim in Arizona for up to six weeks in a private one-bedroom apartment above the historic Verkamp's Visitor Center overlooking the Canyon. In addition to free live/workspace, a modest stipend is offered to offset the costs of travel, food, and supplies. Residents have first-hand access to the natural beauty of Grand Canyon National Park, park leadership, staff expertise, on-site resources, archives, and visitors from around the world.

List og Land

Isjafjörður, Iceland

List og Land at Laugaból Farm in Iceland’s Westfjords region is distinct for extraordinary solitude and beauty.  Residents can draw inspiration from the incredible Icelandic natural features surrounding the residency: ancient volcanos, waterfalls, rivers, mountains, valleys and the sea.  It is possible to hike for hours without leaving the property.  Stone ruins can be found scattered across the 4000+ acres of our grounds.  It is not uncommon for residents to be visited by whales, seals, arctic foxes, huldufólk, and swans.  List og Land is an international residency open to all. We believe that artists and writers thrive at the intersection of nature and community. We consider connections with nature and each to be the raw and sacred material for creative work.

Creekside Arts Residency Program

Eureka, CA, United States

CREEKSIDE ARTS offers an Artist-in-Residence Program that is a unique opportunity to reflect, create and explore in an inspiring setting among the Redwoods of Northern California. Preference will be given to applications that demonstrate a project focus on what is dear to our community: Land, place, community, nature, climate, education, and social and political consciousness.

We provide an inspiring natural setting among the coastal redwoods of Northern California for individuals as well as collaborative artistic work and expression. We welcome artists from a broad range of creative disciplines. We provide a unique opportunity to reflect, create and explore away from the hectic demands and constraints of daily life.

Our location in the heart of the redwoods and home of the Wiyot people provides a natural setting that guides our commitment to a healthy and sustainable environment. Our program facilitates an exchange of creative thought and expression between participants, the neighborhood, and the larger Northern California community with a focus on new work with a social and political consciousness.

Our  programs provide each artist with fully equipped private living quarters and private work/studio spaces. In addition to providing a space for solitary work, our program supports and encourages a collaborative atmosphere. Evening gatherings provide an opportunity to get to know the other resident artists as well as the permanent members of the Creekside Arts community.

Mentorship Residency Program

The Indigo Arts Alliance studio located in Portland, Maine is the host site for our Mentorship Artists Residency program. This program is the heart of IAA, modeling our values of global community building. Our goal is to bring together artists from diverse backgrounds of the African Diaspora to engage in their creative process, while building lasting relationships rooted in co-mentorship. We believe artists hold the key in creating a better world, and in our work, we allow for Black and Brown voices to lead the way.

The Mentorship Residency Program is a pioneering residency concept that serves as an arts incubator with generous workspace and modern facilities enabling the creative work of visual artists across disciplines. We foster mentorship by pairing two artists together during a residency period to cultivate rich conversation, collaboration, and exchange experiences, knowledge, art industry information and technical skills. The artist-pairing consists of a National or International artist who is traveling to the state of Maine from their respective homes to be in residence with a Local/Regional artist. The goal of the pairing is to build positive relationships that enhance the individual artists as human beings and thought leaders. We want to create healthy relationships for artists of color who are navigating their art practice and create avenues of success that build networks.

Additional Eligibility Information

Since 1976, Sculpture Space has helped to support the careers and studio practice of over 650 artists from around the world.  As desired, artists and arts professionals (including curators and writers) are invited for informal studio visits. The collaborative environment of the studio and the communal aspects of the residence help foster dialogue, the exchange of ideas, creative experimentation and both personal and professional connections.  The local community is invited to Works in Progress reception during each cohort; other visits are arranged by appointment.

Artists are selected to the program by a panel of artists and professionals in the sculpting field. Applicants will be notified in March if accepted.  Primary criteria for selection are based on the quality, originality and potential of each artist work and proposed project. We offer a $1000 stipend to offset travel and expenses. Dependent on funding, financial aid may be made available. Funded residencies should not be relied on and all accepted artists are encouraged to find individual grants and funding.
