CubaSeen Artist in Residency in Havana

CubaSeen Artist in Residency in Havana

Vedado Havana, La Habana, Cuba

If you ever dreamed of spending an extended period of time in Cuba simply making art, then this residency is ripe for your consideration. Run by CubaSeen and Santa Fe Workshops, this nine-day residency in Havana offers an immersive program that provides time and space to focus on your creative process inspired by the culture of the city’s thriving arts scene with structured direction and feedback from Cuba’s fine-art professionals.

This is a unique opportunity to travel to Cuba legally while enjoying constructive artistic feedback mixed with unstructured time to think, feel, and create art. The residency culminates with an exhibition at a gallery space in Old Havana.

This residency allows you the time to explore, reflect, and engage your natural curiosity as an artist with support and feedback from influencers in Havana’s sophisticated art community. Homebase is CALIS HAVANA, a boutique hostel in the leafy suburb of Vedado. This renovated 20th Century mansion includes comfortable guest rooms with shared common areas to meet, review work, and share meals.

In addition to accommodations and workspace, the residency offers structured critiques with Cuban artists and curators including Nelson Ramírez de Arellano, Director of the Wifredo Lam Contemporary Art Center and Havana Art Biennial. Visits to galleries and artist’s studios further enrich the program’s outreach.

This residency complies with US Treasury Department General License requirements for legal travel to Cuba.

Salt Artistic Residency

Location

69 Rua Pinheiro Chagas
1050-176 Lisboa
Portugal

Inspired by the age-old tradition of familiar salt production in the south of Portugal and fueled by the boundless possibilities of new media art, we have forged a unique space where these two divergent worlds come together.

Since our roots run deep in the tradition of the sea and salt, our residency is a tribute to the legacy that has shaped our generations and community. The timeless art of harvesting salt from the earth, guided by ancestral knowledge and the rhythm of nature, forms the bedrock of our inspiration.

AiR Winter 2025 in Portugal

Associated Residency Program

The Buinho Residency program is designed for individuals hailing from diverse creative and research backgrounds.

Located in the scenic Alentejo region of Southern Portugal, Buinho's creative hub was established with the invaluable support of a curatorial team boasting over a decade of experience in organizing and facilitating various residency initiatives across Portugal.

Since its inception in 2016, Buinho has experienced remarkable growth in the number of applications it receives, solidifying its reputation as a highly sought-after artistic residency program. Today, Buinho stands as a prominent European beacon in the realm of artistic residencies due to its unique affiliation with a Fablab, which amplifies creative experimentation opportunities.

Our journey commenced with a single house accommodating two residents and the Fablab. However, we have since expanded significantly, now boasting five distinct houses, offering both shared and private studios, a state-of-the-art digital fabrication workshop, as well as dedicated exhibition spaces. In collaboration with the local municipality, we are proud to offer access to a metalworking workshop exclusively dedicated to sculpture and plastic recycling.

Throughout our history, we have been privileged to host a diverse array of artists, including visual artists, performance artists, photographers, curators, writers, sculptors, designers, and media artists, underscoring the eclectic and inclusive nature of our program.

Buinho stands as an early pioneer among rural FabLabs in Portugal, offering artists a boundless realm for their creative exploration. Nestled in one of the sunniest corners of Europe, we empower our residents to delve into an array of cutting-edge technologies, including 3D Printing, Lasercut, CNC, and more. Artists interested in participating should send by email (info@buinho.pt) a short curriculum, motivation letter, and description of the project. Equally important is to mention the proposed dates for the residency (start and length).

Applications are evaluated by an advisory committee and take into consideration the following parameters:
a) artistic quality;
b) relevance of the project;
c) motivation of the candidate.

Our AIR program values multidisciplinary, so we expect the acceptance of creatives from different backgrounds, media, and experiences.  We also try to support emerging artists who seek opportunities for international visibility and curriculum. The level of scrutiny of the portfolio's quality is proportionate to the artist's experience.

Fees 2025

We do not have public or private funding for the residencies, and aside from the normal house bills and work consumables, we have a full-time person just for production support of the residencies. As such, we have to apply fees, but we do keep the fees to a minimum since we are a not-for-profit association based in a rural area.

We try to differentiate the value of the residency fees according to the characteristics of the accommodation since each house offers bedrooms and spaces with different dimensions and privacy.

Monthly fees are the following:

1. São João larger bedroom with private bathroom - 900€;

2. São João other two bedrooms - 800€;

3. Casa da Padaria - 900€;

4. Casa da Avo - 900€.

Accompanying person has a 50% discount but must share the accommodation. It is an additional measure to support couples, artists with children, or possible artistic collaborations.a

The minimum duration of each residency is two weeks and the maximum is two months. Residencies should start either on the 1st or on the 15th of each month.

Please note that after the acceptance in Buinho AIR program, we will ask for an initial deposit of 50% of the total value of the stay. The remaining 50% is to be paid during the first week of residency. For payment of the deposit, the resident can choose bank transfer. Buinho will issue a receipt or send a formal acceptance letter if needed.

Cancellation requests with a full reimbursement of the deposit should be made by writing within 5 months before the start of the period of stay. All other cancellations will not result in the refund. Deposits are non-refundable and residency dates are non-transferable.

How much of the residency experience can artists with limited mobility participate?

It depends on the level of disability, and we need to assess accommodation possibilities on a case-by-case basis. For instance, please note that the bedrooms and the main workshop are located on upper floors.

Please briefly describe the facilities and areas of the campus that are NOT accessible.

The main studio is located on the second floor, and both bedrooms are also upstairs, one on the first level and the other, which is less accessible, on the second level. Neither of the two entrances is wheelchair accessible. Additionally, as it's an old renovated barn, there are variations in floor levels throughout the residence.

2025 Summer/Fall Studio Residency

Associated Residency Program

Open Call to Artists: Popps Packing Studio Residency:

Popps Packing offers residencies for emerging, mid-career, and established, visual artists interested in an immersive experience within the cities of Hamtramck and Detroit, Michigan. Artists working in all studio based practices are welcome to apply but our resources and spaces best accommodate sculptors, installation artists, architectural and landscape based projects as well as photo, film and research projects. Popps Packing accommodates 2 artists at one time.

Residency Details:

  • Duration: 1- 3 month, Starting April 2025
  • The space accommodates 2 resident artists at one time
  • Accommodation: Resident artists will be provided with a private bedroom within a 2 bedroom loft-style studio. In this communal living arrangement, you will have access to shared kitchen, bathroom, and studio spaces. Please note that the Popps Residency functions as a studio space 1st and may not offer the cozy comforts of a home atmosphere. The private bedrooms are comfortable and well-maintained, but the overall ambiance is that of a concrete loft-style warehouse.
  • Cost: $850-$1000/ Month utilities included payment for the full residency term can be paid upfront or on the 1st of each month if staying for multiple months.

Who We Are Looking For:

We are seeking artists with a serious studio practice who can make the most of the facilities, space, and time that Popps Packing offers. Artists must be able to live/work alongside other artists.  Artists must commit to maintaining the communal working/ living environment.

More about life at Popps Packing:

Popps Packing is a communal and familial environment that fosters a sense of community among resident artists. A permanent resident resides on the premises in a separate apartment above the studios and has regular access to laundry facilities, the Popps workshop  and the yard. Our founding Resident artists, Graem Whyte and Faina Lerman, live across the street and have their studio and workshop spaces within the same building.

Popps Packing occasionally hosts small gatherings, public events, workshops, open studios, tours, and other community activities. We prioritize clear communication and will inform resident artists in advance of these events. We also encourage resident artists to propose and host public-facing programs during their residency, which could be a workshop, performance, open studio, artist talk or screening.

Please Note:

The Popps Packing building is an old warehouse, and as such, continuous maintenance and upkeep are performed throughout the year.

Ecotones: Arts at Field Stations and Marine Labs

Ecotones is a consortium of biological field stations and marine labs that host artist residencies and other arts activities. As transition zones between two different environments, ecotones are rich environments. Living things from each habitat wander into the edge, and others specialize in the edge habitat itself. Wander into this rich ecotone where art, science, and the environment share overlapping boundaries.
