Trillium Arts is an artist residency center where artists of many disciplines can find a creative home away from home, offering secluded space for rejuvenation in a beautiful, remote setting in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Our facilities during the fall months are best suited to the disciplines of literary arts, photography, visual arts and arts administration.

Applications are now being accepted for our Individual Artist Residencies for Fall 2025. One week residences are available in the months of  September, October and November.

Individual artists who do not require a rehearsal studio (such as writers and photographers) are encouraged to apply for a one week residency. Performing artists (such as choreographers and theater artists) are also welcome to apply, with the understanding that the Red Barn Studio is seasonal and availability is dependent on weather. The Red Barn Studio will not be available after October 31. Use of the studio is an additional fee of $35 per day.

Note that there is ample land and outdoor space available for ideation and research. We are currently unable to accommodate groups or collaboratives on the Trillium property. Individual artist residencies are a solo adventure during their time here and your residency will not overlap with other awarded artists. If an artist would like to bring collaborators, there are a variety of AirBnB’s available for rent in the immediate area. A list of recommended AirBnB’s is available upon request.

Who is eligible? Artists of various disciplines (writers, photographers, visual artists, choreographers) at any stage of their careers are invited to apply. There is no application fee.

The Studios of Key West, the premier arts organization at the Southernmost Point of the United States, offers a residency program for emerging and established artists and writers from around the world. We provide residencies to visual artists, writers, composers, musicians, media artists, performers, and interdisciplinary artists.

The program grants nearly 40 artists each year the time and space to imagine new artistic work, engage in valuable dialogue and explore island connections. The Studios’ residency program is community-based and built upon the hope that visiting artists will take inspiration from Key West’s rich artistic past and present, and will engage with — and be inspired by — the remarkable people and culture that surrounds them.

Key West’s official motto, “One Human Family” reflects our commitment to living together as caring, sharing neighbors dedicated to making our home as close to paradise as we can. To that end, we encourage artists of all races, nationalities, gender identities, sexual orientations, and abilities to apply. Residencies are almost a full month, Our residencies are one month; they run from the 2nd day of the month to the last day of the month. The newly renovated guest house has 4 artist residencies including 1 ADA-accessible unit, with a shared kitchen, covered courtyard and lushly landscaped grounds.

Hundreds of writers and artists have since come to Key West through the Peyton Evans Artist Residency (PEAR) Program, many returning and several relocating permanently.

In an inspirational setting removed from the distractions of daily life, CIAR’s Fall Residency Programs offer visual artists focused time and a uniquely supportive environment to develop their work. On a small island off the coast of Massachusetts, CIAR hosts groups of twelve artists, who are invited to use the island itself as their studio. Living together in the historic Avalon Inn, the residents have uninterrupted time to become immersed in their creative process. Many use the time to reflect, learn from one another, and find inspiration from their coastal surroundings. Residents build insight and camaraderie as they sit down to meals together, cooked by CIAR's wonderful chef.

In 2025, we are offering two Fall Residencies:

Session #1 (September 2 - 9) features painter Amy Bennett as Visiting Artist and coastal geologist Dr. Katie Castagno as Visiting Scientist. Both will give talks open to the community during the week.

New:  Session #2 (September 11 - 18) offers the CIAR residency experience with an added Professional Practices focus, with Matthew Deleget as Visiting Mentor and painter Aleah Chapin as Visiting Artist. Matthew will meet with each participant for one-on-one sessions offering guidance on their individual career goals and development. Aleah will give an artist talk open to the public.
