Aviário Studio Artist Book Residency - Spring/Summer 2026

Associated Residency Program

An art residency provides the technical conditions, time, and space to develop ideas and try new approaches. It is a moment that promotes connection between artists from different backgrounds and consequently the exchange of knowledge and experiences.

Aviário Studio Artist Book Residency aims to promote the exploration and production in the Artist Book field. Artist books are consensually understood as an object that takes the shape or the dynamics of a book, and is made by an artist. There are many ways to conceive a book, and given the multidisciplinary features of Aviário Studio, it is possible to pursue very distinct paths.

We offer the conditions to test possibilities and materialize ideas. On one hand, it can be a moment of transition, more connected to experimentation and research; on the other hand, it can be the point of consolidation of a project translated into the production of a new body of work.

The duration, focus and outcome of the residency is defined by the participating artist’s goals.

Printmaking Residency: Winter Session 2025-6

Associated Residency Program

Now accepting applications for 1-2 week residencies during our Winter Session, December 2025 - February 2026.

The Center for Contemporary Printmaking (CCP) Residency Program offers solo Artists-in-Residence the unique opportunity to live and work inside a dedicated studio: the Helen Frankenthaler Printmaking Cottage. Within this space artists can produce a body of work in a supportive atmosphere that fosters creative growth and development, for traditional as well as innovative printmaking techniques.

The intention of the residency is to offer artists one to two weeks of uninterrupted, 24/7 time and privacy in a well-equipped studio with onsite living accommodations. This solo residency has proven to be an ideal opportunity for experimentation and collaboration. Artists can add to their work practice, explore new mediums, create an edition, or otherwise advance their printmaking skills. CCP strives to advance outcomes from the residency that stimulate original and inventive work that the artist might not otherwise have attempted absent these amenities.

One of the goals of our residency programs, whether Professional Development or Self-funded, is engaging our local community in an exchange of ideas and techniques. Artists-in-residence will have the opportunity to conduct a studio talk or workshop for the Norwalk community and greater New York metropolitan area. CCP will work with the artist to schedule and promote the additional programming through various outreach methods, including social media, to ensure a broad audience.

RESIDENCY STRUCTURE & SESSION SCHEDULE

CCP accepts applications on a semi-annual basis. Sessions are defined as follows:

  • Winter Session: December – February (Deadline to apply JULY 1st)
  • Summer Session: Mid-May – Early September (Deadline apply JANUARY 1st)

Duration: Artists applying may request a one or two week stay during these periods.

Community Engagement: One of the goals of our Residency Program is engaging our local community in an exchange of ideas and techniques. Artists participating in any of CCP’s residencies will have the opportunity to conduct a studio talk or teach a workshop for CCP artists/members and other artists in the Norwalk community and greater New York metropolitan area. CCP will work with the artist to schedule and promote the additional programming through various outreach methods, including social media, to ensure a broad audience.

Edition Expectations: A print or set of prints created during the residency will be retained by CCP to be included in our print archive as a record of the artist’s time at CCP.

RESIDENCY APPLICATION PROCESS

To apply for a residency, please visit the CCP website and apply online:

https://contemprints.org/artist-in-residence-program/residency-application/

Prepare the following materials ahead-of-time for submission via the online form:

  • A detailed Project Proposal. Please be as specific as possible (500 words maximum). We want to know what you want to accomplish during your residency and how the opportunity to come to CCP with its facilities, expertise, and staff experience can benefit your project development and uniquely help grow your printmaking practice. Consider the following:
    • Why us? What does a Residency at the Center for Contemporary Printmaking uniquely offer for your work?
    • Be forthright and clear about what you want to do and how we can help at a practical level.
    • Be conservative in your scope. We expect some level of completed work at the end of your Residency.
  • A Proposed Budget. See "Residency Costs" section below
  • CV (2 page maximum) and Artist Bio (250 words)
  • Seven-ten images of recent work related to your proposal (jpgs, 5MB max each), with an accompanying image checklist specifying Title, Date, Medium, Dimensions, and Edition. While we understand that printmakers often create art in other mediums, we expect the images submitted for this residency to be primarily Original Prints.
  • Two professional references who can speak about your work, provide name, contact information, and relationship/association to you
  • An application fee of $35 (use payment link provided)

When the application is complete and fees received, the artist will receive an email indicating receipt. If you need additional information, please contact us at AIR@contemprints.org.

Interview: An interview will be requested of all artists who are accepted into the final round of decision-making. This interview will be conducted via Zoom with representatives of the AIR Committee. Decisions will be made within one month following the Application Due Date.

RESIDENCY FUNDING METHODS

  • Professional Development - Artists teaching at colleges, universities, and high schools throughout the United States are invited to apply for one- or two-week residency based on professional funding guidelines at your institution. This opportunity is meant to further individual artistic objectives in printmaking. CCP will match 50 percent of residency costs to a maximum of $2,500 associated with the AIR. The Grace Ross Shanley Education Fund and other secured funds will provide underwriting for the matching funding.
  • Self-funding - All costs related to the project and cottage stay will be the responsibility of the artist unless funding assistance through CCP agreed to prior to residency start date.
  • CCP funded - In an attempt to expand opportunities for artists who may not have other funding, CCP has offered to underwrite funding for Resident Artists up to $5,000. This funding is available for artists applying to Summer Session only. (Artists with other funding are not excluded from applying to Session 3.)
NOTE: If you are applying for CCP funding support for the residency, please provide the funding amount requested based on your proposed budget. You may request "fully funded" or "partially funded." If Partial, detail those budget items that will require funding. (CCP-funded residencies are only available for the summer session.)

Artist Residencies in Key West, FL

Key West, FL, United States

The Studios of Key West, the premier arts organization at the Southernmost Point of the United States, offers a residency program for emerging and established artists and writers from around the world. We provide residencies to visual artists, writers, composers, musicians, media artists, performers, and interdisciplinary artists.

The program grants nearly 35 artists each year the time and space to imagine new artistic work, engage in valuable dialogue and explore island connections. The Studios’ residency program is community-based and built upon the hope that visiting artists will take inspiration from Key West’s rich artistic past and present, and will engage with — and be inspired by — the remarkable people and culture that surrounds them.

Key West’s official motto, “One Human Family” reflects our commitment to living together as caring, sharing neighbors dedicated to making our home as close to paradise as we can. To that end, we encourage artists of all races, nationalities, gender identities, sexual orientations, and abilities to apply. Residencies are almost a full month, and run from the 16th of the month through the 14th of the next. The newly renovated guest house has 4 artist residencies including 1 ADA-accessible unit, with a shared kitchen, covered courtyard and lushly landscaped grounds.

Hundreds of writers and artists have since come to Key West through the Peyton Evans Artist Residency (PEAR) Program, many returning and several relocating permanently.

The Studios of Key West is located at the former Scottish Rite Masonic Center at the corner of Simonton and Eaton Streets, renovated through generous donations in 2015. Built in 1951, it’s spacious, sturdy and suffused with light – an iconic piece of Miami Deco architecture located in the heart of downtown Key West, just one block from Duval Street.

This museum facility includes a 200 seat professional theater, museum galleries devoted to contemporary art, eight studios for practicing artists, and two dedicated classrooms. The rooftop, Hugh’s View, sits atop the three story building, providing space for outdoor programming such as concerts, plein air classes and more. The PEAR House, home of the Peyton Evans Artist Residencies program, is located just next door and recently underwent a $2M renovation. And most recently, The Studios acquired a woodshop space on Stock Island, a few miles north of the main campus, but with access to work tables, table saws and more, it's another way to provide working space to artists.

With dedicated creative spaces for exhibitions, performances, instruction and art making, and housing artist residencies, our facilities offer a cultural platform that lives up to Key West’s creative potential.

Artists will have access to a shared kitchen, a covered outdoor common area, and a shaded courtyard. Japan 2026 & 2028: Take Your Creative Flow on the Road

Associated Residency Program

Is nature your muse, inspiration, or collaborator? Let your creativity FLOW on a two week travel experience with nature and art as the primary focus in Japan featuring some of the amazing sites and off-the-beaten path areas of Japan with a dozen creative people.

Check out the itinerary for summer (July into August) 2026 and 2028.

Have you ever wanted to travel to Japan, but worried about logistics, the planning, or the language? This is a bi-annual experience lead by residency program founder/director and artist who is passionate about Japan. A childhood influence of life in Okinawa, eventually lead to interest in East Asian studies curriculum and developing study abroad programming. Val has spent solo time in Japan for sabbatical and other seasonal research investigations with camera in tow.

The goal for this trip is to have an art and nature immersion with fellow creatives who want to photograph, draw, paint, journal, doodle, and otherwise explore art and culture activities such as shrines, temples, gardens, and galleries or museums. If you are looking for a more enriching experience than photo ops for social media, we can spend time in walkabouts at various times of day or night, have sit spots for drawing/painting, and likely converse over meals about whatever we saw that day. If you love to explore with your visual sensibilities, but that annoys your regular travel mates then this experience is up your alley.

2026 plans will take us from Tokyo north to Hokkaido. If you love the outdoors, you'll love this itinerary.
https://www.sarasvati.space/japan-2026

2028 plans will take us into the Japanese Alps area and highlights include Nagano and Matsumoto bookmarking a week house share in a village in the ski zone when summer is in full swing. Some bucket list art activities are on this agenda.

Registration and deposits start up to a year in advance to make sure we get the most interesting lodging options for our group. Payment plans available. All inquiries will have a video chat to talk about the trip to make sure we all will jive, unlike most other travel tours that just put together the random people who sign up.

Additional Eligibility Information

Applicants with nature as their muse, inspiration, or collaborator will receive priority.

Individuals must demonstrate an interest in taking creative practice on the road and why the specific location of Japan would be beneficial.

Individuals must demonstrate ability to travel with a group and be amenable to sometimes shared housing or using traditional Japanese style sleeping on futons and tatami mats. Participants must be willing to adjust personal habits to adapt to the culture in Japan such as not eating while walking, remaining relatively quiet on public trains and buses, not wearing shoes inside. Participants must be willing to travel light and not take luggage larger than a carry-on meaning you may need to do laundry at some point during the trip. You must be able to carry your own luggage through train stations and up/down lots of stairs as elevators and escalators are not as often available or are really out of the way when traveling with 12 people.

Participants must be adaptable and willing to go with the flow. We may have a general itinerary for the day or it may be a spontaneous adventure. There are some days that you'll be able to split off on your own or in small groups depending on the particular place. Val will be coordinating the trip and act as a guide to get us to each destination, but much of the time will be on your own.

Participants should be more interested in the creative and cultural experience rather than partying all night or drinking like a salaryman having a bad hang-over. Reminder that smoking is still allowed in some restaurants, but not while walking on streets. Prefer participants who are non-smokers and non-vapers as well as those who are moderate or limited in alcohol consumption. Participants should be willing to try the cuisine or at least be open to the various options knowing that sometimes we cannot find a restaurant to suit each person in that moment.

If you are interested in extending your residency on site in Tennessee to work with Val on your project, please inquire.

Note: If you are on anti-anxiety or other medication, please note that some prescription medications in the U.S. are illegal in Japan. If you are uncomfortable in crowds or have any travel anxiety issues such as panic attacks in place or not knowing where we are going, this is probably not the trip for you. Vegetarians and other special diets are often okay in Japan, but if you don't want to deal with asking, seeing or smelling fish, etc. then this may not be the dream for you.

McColl Center Artist-in-Residence Program

Charlotte, NC, United States

The McColl Center's internationally acclaimed Artist-in-Residence program serves as a catalyst for growth for emerging and mid-career artists. McColl Center hosts three residency terms per year—fall, winter/spring, and summer, for four artists per term. An artist residency at McColl Center is a moment to think big, take risks in the creative process, and explore ideas within the context of Charlotte.

Artists-in-residence receive private housing adjacent to McColl Center, a large-scale private studio in our historic building in Uptown Charlotte, curatorial guidance, marketing and PR support, and a generous stipend. While in residency, our artists have the freedom to fully focus on artistic research, exploration, and creation while also engaging with McColl Center’s Igniters community and the local creative sector.

We pose this challenge to our artists: look at New Bedford as a source of inspiration for their work. This residency is for artists that wish to engage with our visitors, staff, and volunteers. Our residency is studio-based and does not include housing. We believe that art should be accessible to all people. It is the artist’s role to act as a catalyst for both inspiration and radical inclusion.

Aviário Studio Artist Book Residency - Fall and Winter 2025/6
