We strive to create conditions in which every person is supported to bring their whole, best self to do great work, to learn and to grow. We are building a habit of open and skillful interactions about race and racism, gender and sexism.

We use a bi-annual nomination process to reach a diverse pool of candidates from across the U.S. and to focus administrative resources on the program itself. The process begins with an invitation to dozens of nominators (alumni, academics, artists, curators, writers, etc.) to share names of eligible individuals, including visual artists, curators, writers, or other art professionals. Nominees must have a strong work history and be interested in a largely self-directed experience in a secluded setting. Above all, they must be kind and thoughtful of others.

Nominees show their interest by submitting an online application, and selections are made by lottery to ensure that all applications are considered equally. We aim to balance accepted residents with a waitlist in case of cancellations. Residents are given access to a handbook with details of our program and events, including informal studio visits and guided nature explorations.

Le Piazze, Cetona , SI, Italy

Essere Residency, newly founded in 2023, is an annual, self-directed program designed to encourage the creative and personal growth of writers, artists and creatives of all disciplines at any stage of their career or personal self-expression.

The residency offers a supportive space to cultivate the inner state of being which yields authentic productivity. Each person’s unique creative process is fostered within the context of a vibrant international community, in the tranquility and historic richness of rural Tuscany.

Whether you need dedicated time to bring a project to completion, or space to envision something totally new, this two-week residency delivers the right amount of structure, support and solitude.

Days are free to explore your creative vision and share perspectives with artists of different ages and cultures from all over the world. Evenings we come together  for inspiring talks by the Artists in Residence on topics of relevance to all, such as Mindset & the Successful Artist, Coaxing the Intuitive Muse, and Authentic Marketing.  These talks are followed by a delicious 3-course dinner and wine prepared by our local chef.

Individual mentorship in specific disciplines is available by appointment with the AiRs and residency Director, Jennie Lee, will be available for personal coaching support throughout your time in residency.

Peyton Evans Artist Residency Program Open Call

Associated Residency Program

The Studios of Key West, the premier arts organization at the Southernmost Point of the United States, offers a residency program for emerging and established artists and writers from around the world. The program grants nearly 40 artists each year the time and space to imagine new artistic work, engage in valuable dialogue and explore island connections. Key West’s official motto, “One Human Family” reflects our commitment to living together as caring, sharing neighbors dedicated to making our home as close to paradise as we can. To that end, we encourage artists of all races, nationalities, gender identities, sexual orientations, and abilities to apply. Residencies are almost a full month, Our residencies are one month; they run from the 2nd day of the month to the last day of the month. The newly renovated guest house has 4 artist residencies including 1 ADA-accessible unit, with a shared kitchen, covered courtyard and lushly landscaped grounds.

CIAR accepts visual artists at all stages of their career. We encourage applicants who will benefit from nature as a tool in their creative process, especially those who will use the unique natural environment of Cuttyhunk Island as their studios. Our facilities are conducive to artists with a portable studio practice, an ability to work on projects with easy set-up and break-down methods. Artists may also set up temporary work spaces on our large wraparound, covered porch overlooking Vineyard Sound. We also see this time as a way for artists to wander, think, and sketch. The beautiful nature trails and quiet beaches offer a sense of escape from our busy lives.

Examples of work methods supported by our facilities:

  • drawing
  • painting
  • collage
  • small sculpture projects (not needing special tools or shop space)

Please briefly describe the facilities and areas of the campus that are NOT accessible.

Most of our bedrooms are up one flight of stairs with no elevator access. However, we do have a couple bedrooms on the first floor reserved for those with limited mobility.

Aviário Studio Ceramics Residency

Ferreira do Zêzere, Portugal

An art residency provides the technical conditions, time, and space to develop ideas and try new approaches. It is a moment that promotes connection between artists from different backgrounds and consequently the exchange of knowledge and experiences.

Aviário Studio Ceramics Residency aims to promote the exploration and production in the Ceramics field. The program is customized according to the participating artist’s goals regarding duration, outcome and focus.  We offer the conditions to test possibilities and materialize ideas. On one hand, it can be a moment of transition, more connected to experimentation, research and learning new techniques; on the other hand, it can be the point of consolidation of a project translated into the production of a new body of work.

Additional Studio Information

Aviário Studio is a creative playground to test possibilities and materialize ideas.

Residencies here can be focused on research or production and although we do not demand a result – leaving that to the decision of each artist in residence, we are open to discussing the possibility of developing events such as exhibitions, collaborative projects, workshops or lectures.

We welcome emerging and established artists from all backgrounds to develop their projects at Aviário Studio. We provide technical assistance, project discussion, and facilitate the connection for artists to find the resources needed, within our network, to accomplish their objectives.
